Pitchers can't seem to stay healthy lately.
The Indians' Kevin Millwood has gone on the disabled list with a strained right groin. Despite a 1-4 record, he contributed a 3.20 ERA to a young staff. And although the Indians are in need of hitting (less than four runs a game), they need all the pitching they can get to give their team a chance in close games. Now Brian Tallet will be promoted to the team from AAA Buffalo. Tallet, a starter, hasn't pitched in the majors in two years.
Another pitcher with a good start, The Orioles' Erik Bedard, will go on the DL for a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Bedard has been amazing with a 5-1 ERA and a 2.06 ERA. The lefthander will make way for a young prospect, Hayden Penn, a 21-year-old right-hander from AA, to start against the Tigers on Saturday.
And the Red Sox have been reluctant to announce how much time Curt Schilling will miss, but the Boston Herald was told from sources that the team could be without him until at least the All-Star Break in July. Schilling (1-2, 8.15 ERA) has suffered from an ankle injury since April 29.
The Sox will face the Blue Jays this weekend, and are scheduled to face ace Roy Halladay on Sunday. Halladay (7-2, 2.84 ERA) has suffered form a strained left oblique muscle and will miss his start Thursday, therefore his Sunday start will be the result of a strained oblique muscle on his left side.
It wasn't a good news day if you were a starting pitcher.
