The controversial hockey commentator has outshone his brethren when it comes to predictions and thoughts about the game.
Not so long ago a Montreal political columnist went off on hockey commentator Don Cherry. Odd, I thought to myself, to have a political pundit waste space and time on the hockey man. Worse, I found it to be a tad trite and pointless. Big deal, Prime Minster Harper hung around Don Cherry. I thought it was a free country.…

hat was not cheap. somewhere around $75 if i can remember.
probably the warmest hat i've ever worn. i tell you, when it's zero degrees outside and i've got to clear the driveway, it's worth dealing with the funny looks i get from the people driving by.
can't get into Ornette? i'll try not to hold that against you.
27 - alessandro nicolo
I can't explain it. It's one of those things. Maybe I should give him another shot. More into hard bop. Enjoy Mary Lou Williams. Even more into vocalists like Holiday and Peyroux.
28 - Mark Saleski
you don't have to explain. personal taste is a mysterious thing. i mean, i like hard bop too. ever listen to early Ornette? "This Is Our Music", maybe?
also, the just released live disc is pretty good.
29 - alessandro nicolo
No. But I will now! Thanks.
30 - Tsegi
It was really uncalled for to compare anyone's fashion nonsense with Mongolians.
As a Mongolian, I would appreciate if you just change your silly article!
By the way,RJ Elliot, history is history. Almost every country and every nation has a hero whom the others consider barbaric monster. So read and learn, don't mix the past with any other insult!!!Phillip Winn, we do have great sense of fashion and HUMOR, but that doesn't mean some Canadian can mention my nativity in some stupid joke!!!
31 - alessandro nicolo
Tsegi, I would appreciate, as a writer who lives in freedom of speech and thought, you rethink your 'silly' thin-skinned comment. Censorship is an ugly thing. This is where I draw the line to any other Mongol who feels the need to waste time here. I am strong enough to let any perceived blemishes on my part exist. The piece stands as is - not that you read or understood it. You guys are blowing this out of proportion. Satire is simple not your thing. Move on. Who would have thought that an innocuous and frivolous reference would lead to an international incident? What would happen if we did something serious? I suddenly have an urge for Mongolian food. We apparently have a good one in town here.
32 - Mongolian girl
Do not be such a chatty without any knowledge about Mongolia and it's people.
Come here and after that write your opinion about my country. I really believe that you will be never found real story about Mongolian history from your history books.
33 - RJ Elliott
"Come here and after that write your opinion about my country."
Why would I want to hang out with Mongoloids all day? That's social work. Fuck social work.
But I do love your buffet!
34 - Mongoloid
... when Mongols come to invade Europe, Europeans had no underwear. their so called barbarians used to wear silk underwear...
"Out of the three main races in craniofacial anthropology, the Mongoloid race is the second most populous race with 33% of the world's population."
f&^kin racist shithole
35 - PuppyKhan
It amazing just how much ignorance and prejudice persists today. The fashion sense comment is a result of a presumed superiority. The subsequent rants of considering them unenlightened shows nothing but a total lack of knowledge of history. The Mongoloid race comment refers to an ethnocentric theory disproven over a hundred years ago.
Having visited Mongolia a few times, their fashion sense falls into two categories typically: practical or sexy. Think they have most of my Canook friends beat, even the ones with American envy. Historically, the Mongol Empire may have come to power in a brutal way, though no more brutal than any other country of its time, but also without the cultural prejudice exhibited by any other power. They encouraged all trade, art and religion within and even beyond their borders and had a permanent influence on all Eurasian culture driving both the Renaissance and Age of Exploration in Europe.
Most cultures prospered under Mongol rule, try to say that about anyone conquered by Europeans. Yet people need to put someone else down to alleviate their insecurities.
36 - don cheri
Mongolians are the best hockey players in the world!
37 - Mongol Man
Stupid article. We know how to dress. Everyone knows we can't read. Dumbass.
38 - Jessica
Alessandro is my husband and I decided to leave him. I didn't think he was such an insensitive Mongol - er, jerk. Thank you for giving me the courage to see the light. Al, if you're reading this I want a divorce. I can't live with someone who would disparage an entire race of people from Kentucky. I thought I knew you.
39 - alessandro nicolo
Jessie, nooooo! Mongoloid with no url, you can call me insensitive and you may accuse of me of not thinking but you are most certainly not entitled to accuse me of racism. I will defend myself to the death on this. Spare us the history lessons, people. Hyperbole abounds...
40 - A. Bunker
As an Italo-Canadian, I too have been slighted because of my heritage. It isn't fun being the butt of jokes or at the end of a pointing finger. Those people are all dead now. So this bashing of Mongolia and its fashion sense is hurtful. Shame on the writer for adding fuel to this misconceived fire. Besides, there are several other races to shoot at that are way more important, yet as insignificant as the Mongols; like Greeks, Jews, 90% of Africa, people from Toronto, one of my neighbours that insists on placing his garbage on my grass on garbage day, that guy on TV that always says, "can you hear me now?" along with several others. So to all Mongolians, I apologize to you on behalf of this writer; you shouldn't have been picked on until April 2084, by then, you might have actually taken over the world again, but this time, by selling time shares to us unassuming Westerners and not by clubbing us over the head like in the olden days.
41 - alessandro nicolo
A. Bunker, You don't speak for me, meathead.
42 - alessandro nicolo
By the way, the last two are jokes. As in wink, wink.
43 - Jesse J.
I don't like hockey, too many white guys slapping around a black puck.
44 - Meriwether
Alessandro is a stubborn guy with a large ego. First he makes a unintentional (not to mean unharmful) slip of a tongue. He proceeds to defend his take and adds other comments but this time from a position of guy who knows what he's talking about and with full intention.
Unfortunately, his knowledge on the subject matter is limited, to say the least. He persists with some outdated tidbits from highschool, however. Hmm...
45 - Mike R.
Meriwether, as a friend of AN I feel compelled to step in. I can assure you that nothing could be further from the truth about him.
46 - Ferdie Pacheco
I guess Meriwether did take too many blows to the head.
47 - alessandro nicolo
Thanks Mike. Whoever you are. Yeah, the missus and I had a laugh over the last comment. It is what it is. She warned me (as you did) against using dry humour when it comes to people who feel sleighted. After all, they don't know me. Trust me, I have not a bad thought about Mongolians and their attire in my heart. I have to go out and buy me one them hats Mark has. Live and learn. Sigh, smart-alecs and foreign policy are not a good mix I guess. If I could do it all over I would keep my fingers to myself and not type. Anyway, I'm thinking of getting Teamster thugs to defend me. I wonder what their rates are like. Anyone know? Anyway, is this a good time to come clean and mention I earned a 3.4 GPA in history in University? I won't name the institution lest they get bombarded with hate mail and get delicensed. Come to think of it, my education was pretty saucy. I'm so confused. I'm also very sad.
48 - Mike R.
I think you just did. Wow! Ferdie Pacheco reads your posts. Good stuff. Hey, I see two comments and you reach 50. I'm sure you'll reach that number no sweat. Congrats.
49 - Matthew T. Sussman
For the record, after sloughing through all the comments I am now more racist toward Mongolians.
50 - sfg
Whaddaya talking about! The Mongols of the 11th century had KICKASS fashion sense! :)
(And I am NOT being sarcastic!)
51 - Pico
I thought Eternal Rhythm was one of his best albums.
-P
52 - Glen Boyd
For the record, I miss the stir-fried Mongolian steak Sandwich they used to serve up at the old Food Circus at the Seattle Center. Required dining for about a buck fitty before going to the big rock shows at the Coliseum.
-Glen
P.S. As for Don Cherry, I know the musician not the sports caster. But as I recall didn't the great Howard Cosell used to get a similar rap?
53 - alessandro nicolo
Hi Glen. Yes, Cosell did get hit but I'm not sure if it was as hard as Cherry. Let's be frank here - Cherry does provoke and not everything that has been said about him is wrong. It's just that journalists - the ones who dress like, um, my friend Joe - seem to take glee in trying to knock him off his horse. It's get to a point where you wonder what their motives are. His persona bothers some and that's fine. The solution is simple: don't watch him.
Pico, I shall keep that in mind.
Sfg, thanks for the comment. Seriously. I appreciate you keeping things in perspective while getting your point across. I let my guard down on that one.
54 - Vern Halen
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Cherry played hockey for ex-NHLer turned coach Eddie Shore in the American League. Now THERE's a guy who would've been an interesting sportscaster. Or the Montreal Canadiens' Sprague Cleghorn - heck, he could've even been a barbarian invader of indeterminate ethnic origin.
55 - alessandro nicolo
Vern, hilarious. I believe he did but I'm not sure. Cherry played one official NHL game and was a career minor leaguer. Sprague Cleghorn; His great grandson (I forget how many degrees) ended up CEO of the Royal Bank of Canada. All those players from that era were colorful characters. Far more than the ones we see today. PR is all that matters. You simply can't afford to slip up these days since people are all too prepared to pounce. Maybe that's why, in part, contemporary athletes seem so dry. Cherry's asset is that he goes past the BS and talks hockey to the hockey fan at their level. Cherry, for his part, coached Bobby Orr. And that is more than enough for most men. Ironically, the media have often referred to him as a Hun.
56 - alessandro nicolo
I want the world to know that Radigan and I have kissed and made out, er made up. Now, if only the UN can learn from this beautiful example.
57 - RJ Elliott
Jacques Demers, now he was a snappy dresser. Of course, he was also illiterate.
Does that make him an honorary Mongoloid?
58 - Pico
Wasn't it another Canadian, Gino Vanelli, who once sang "now don't get paranoid, I ain't a horny little mongoloid"?
What is it with all these Canadians and their Mongolian bashing?
(Just joking of course, but alessandro's ordeal calls to mind those Geico caveman commercials. I think he could relate).
Cheers,
-P
59 - alessandro nicolo
Those Geico commercials are hilarious. Especially the one when he's on the escalator and he just stares at the ad. His look of disgust is pricless.
60 - enkhe
Thank you Radigan and I wish you and your loved ones all the best things in lige, as for you the canadian writer guy- you and your misses are both not very bright. to think of it with the world populations' 5 % being of Mongolian decent (Mongolians spread in eurasia) you have a pretty big chance of being of Mongolian decent. Forget about the fashion sense Mongolians have or do not have, its mostly your later comments that are completely lame. That Pico guy has completely killed me with his Geiko comment. For a person in media A.you should know that you have to verify information you are putting in writing in any case, that just shows that you are not a professional journalist. the most I am sorry about is stumbling across this stupid worthless article of yours and wasting my time to put my comment on it. Shush time wasting no good canadians
61 - Omura
The only thing modern day mongorians are good for is cooking. I enjoy their food but the culture and political influence of that nation is vanished to second rate. Once China grows Mongolia will be annexed and their culture and people absorbed. They tried to invade Japan but failed miserably. Genghis Khan will be remembered for being a rapist and pillager, and their history lacks the refinement of the Japanese samurai.
62 - Dr Dreadful
Omura: "Genghis Khan will be remembered for being a rapist and pillager..."
Will be remembered for being a...?
Where have you been for the last eight centuries?
63 - Omura
Even if my homeland Japan had not wiped out his fleet many years ago when he tried to invade, the samurai would of ate the mongolians for breakfast. His "empire" lacked Japan's sophistication and refinement, and didn't have the fight in them the ancient samurai and their shoguns did, nor the skills we did (or the metalworking). The only thing Mongolians are good for are eating dogs and cooking. Years later Mongolia will not be remembered (even if China does not swallow it whole).
The last eight centuries Japan has tried to live it's own lifestyle free from western influence (until Matthew Perry came and forced us to adopt western ideas) in peace. We wanted to be left alone. No matter what the lies Iris Chang will tell you in her book we are a proud, refined, and ancient people.
