A surprising sentence comes out of Miami today as Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth, who was looking 15 years of jail time, will serve just 30 days after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter. A little over three months ago Stallworth struck and killed Mario Reyes, a 59-year-old pedestrian running to catch the bus, with his Bentley.
Tacked onto those 30 days will be two years of house arrest, 1,000 hours of community service (or 25 business weeks of eight-hour days), court costs and mandatory donations. The Reyes family wanted a speedy end to this emotional time in their lives, and who can blame them? Coupled with the fact that Stallworth felt remorse for his crime, a short sentence was probably inevitable.
He was immediately booked, which means one month from today he'll be released in plenty of time for Browns training camp, which begins July 27. He will, however, miss the series premiere of Better Off Ted.
Just 30 days. Wow. If you need a reference point, eight years ago a kid constantly in trouble with the law vandalized our house, pled guilty to a first degree misdemeanor, and served the exact amount of jail time Stallworth received today.
It doesn't seem right and it doesn't seem fair, but consider: his days with the Browns could be over, especially if the NFL suspends him under their code of conduct. Something tells me this incident kind of qualifies.

Thirty days is ridiculous even with 2 years of house arrest. And I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm a Steeler fan.
