After 23 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, in two different stints during his tenure, secondary coach, Dave Campo, will not have his contract renewed by the team after it expires this year.

Campo spent three of his seasons with the Cowboys as a head coach, all of which were only 5-11 seasons of profound mediocrity.

Dave CampoThis being said, the Cowboys will miss having a man of his class and knowledge on their coaching staff. Few will dispute the decision to let him go, but many avid fans will recognize that the problem Campo faced as a secondary coach was not his ability, but the abilities of his players.

First coming to Dallas on Jimmy Johnson's staff, and winning three Super Bowls, Campo is not a shaky choice as a coach. If anything, his ability has been proven over and over again. What is missing is the caliber of players that those Super Bowl champions of yesteryear had.

Campo, an easy man to ridicule because of his honesty and humility, is an important counterbalance to the bravado of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. But, the fans, and Jerry Jones, needed a scapegoat to protect their pretension about the talent on the field.

Borrowing from the Texas Rangers manager, Ron Washington, "That's the way coaching go."
