BGSU Football Mulls Over Michigan State Loss During Bye Week

Maybe it was too much to expect the Bowling Green football team to pull off consecutive upsets of Big Ten teams. Still, the Falcons had some success against Michigan State Saturday, taking a 14-7 lead before being worn down by the Spartans in the second half and falling, 28-17.

For the second-consecutive week, Falcons’ quarterback Tyler Sheehan showed flashes of brilliance. He completed 32 of 50 passes for 295 yards. He was intercepted twice and fumbled twice, losing one. In the type of offense that the Falcons play, mistakes are unavoidable. Plus, it’s not like BG was playing a bad team. Still, three turnovers will make it difficult to win most weeks.

The defense did not play badly, led by John Haneline, who had seven tackles and a sack. The Falcons also picked off Michigan State’ Brian Hoyer twice. Hoyer was tough on the Falcons, throwing for two TDs and 250 yards.

So what are BG fans left with after two weeks?

Again, there’s some hope. Maybe it’s not the unbridled enthusiasm that existed after the win over Minnesota, but the fact is that BG went to a difficult atmosphere and stayed in the game. That’s a positive sign after a tough 2006.

BG is off this week, but will host Temple on September 22. Temple broke a long losing streak by beating the Falcons last season. If BG truly wants to convince its fans – and itself – that this year will be different, a win is a must.

Still, the optimism continues, even if it’s tied to the back of Sheehan.

Being a student from MSU and not knowing much about Bowling Green, I was surprised by how tough this team faught. The only backround information I knew about this team was that they beat Minnesota in the previous week. Bowling Green's passing game looked great, coming through most of the time on third down conversions. Their QB looks promising, has a great arm, and has good mobility. The defense did a great job defending the run which everyone figured would be all over BG. Overall I was really impressed with this team, and look forward to seeing what BG can do in the MAC this year.

Maybe BGSU should have Matt Sussman videotaping opposing teams from the sidelines?

That's what I've been doing -- but I don't see how videotapes of cheerleaders will help BGSU.
