The following is a partial transcript of the October 25, 2008 edition of the BC Sports Treehouse Fort.
The World Series kicked off this week with the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays each winning a game in the first trip at Tropicana Field. The scores were 3-2 Philly and 4-2 Tampa, keeping the runs down in proportion to the number of viewers.
The Game 1 opener was watched by 14.6 million baseball fans, the second smallest TV audience in World Series Game 1 history. But MLB could not do without its small, fervent fanbase, which means it might be the most important audience in history. Nielsen Media Research will dub the 14.6 million viewers the "Jason Bartlett of ratings."
Speaking of Jason Bartlett, his stolen base in Game 1 enabled America to receive one free taco from Taco Bell on October 28 from 2-6 p.m. local time. All medical bills can be forwarded to Tropicana Field.
Turning to other sports, Isiah Thomas is denying reports he was rushed to the hospital Friday morning after overdosing on sleeping pills in his home. In a related story, Zach Randolph averted an overdose when the Lunesta pills he tried to swallow missed his mouth completely.
Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs raised some eyebrows around the NFL when he said in a radio interview that the Ravens defense has a bounty on Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward. Suggs later apologized and retracted the word "bounty" from his statement, since exchanging money for injuring specific players is illegal. In response, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is deploying Dirty Harry Callahan to investigate Terrell Suggs' winnings in a team-sanctioned injury pool in which he had Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, and Nancy Reagan.
ESPN.com columnist Rick Reilly contacted presidential hopeful Barack Obama to see if he would help him pick his fantasy football team, and Obama indeed helped him. True to form, the Illinois senator filled Reilly's roster with one good football player from every team ahead of Reilly in the standings.
