Even fun and games like the famous Super Bowl can go to far. It was school spirit day and all of the teens at Stepping Stones Academy in Phoenix were encouraged to wear red and white, in support of the Arizona Cardinals making the Super bowl for the first time.
However, Tristan Carrick, 13, wore his Pittsburgh Steelers jersey, not supporting the home team. A teen with Pittsburgh roots, he wore his Hines Ward jersey, a wide receiver on the Steelers. Hines Ward was Super Bowl XL's MVP and got injured in the AFC Championship game against the Ravens, which the Steelers won 23-14. Now, it appears that the school officials sent him home for not joining in the spirit.
Someone better be calling a lawyer. I don't care if you support the black and gold or the red and white, it's completely insane for sending a teen home for wearing a black and gold jersey. At my school, kids wear stuff supporting Corona beer and cigarettes and our school just turns the other way. And to send them home for wearing a football jersey? That's just ridiculous.
In Los Angeles, we don't have a football team, so everyone likes a different team. There are people rooting for the Cardinals and there are others who would like to see the Steelers win their sixth. However, nobody's getting sent home from school or affecting the school environment. The only girl who is being affected by the Super Bowl is the one going to the game and missing a day of school. For everyone else, it's just a football game.
It's reasons like this that the US is number 13 when it comes to education. Maybe this school should focus on academics, instead of making perfectly good kids miss class for liking the Pittsburgh Steelers.
