Talk about a season of feats and milestones! The 2007 season has seen a record number of records broken and rare milestones. Though the season is not over yet, August is winding down, September is coming up, and the playoff races have begun. Here is a list I have compiled throughout the season so far:
- Albert Pujols became the first player to hit 30 home-runs in their first 7 seasons.
- Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home-run
- Alex Rodriguez also reached 100 RBI in under 100 games. This is the first time anyone
has done that since Manny Ramirez did it in 1999 and he is the first Yankee to do it
since Lou Gehrig and Joe Dimaggio did it together.
- Barry Bonds became the new all-time Home-Run King.
- Bobby Cox set the record for most career ejections from games.
- Bobby Jenks set a new consecutive batters retired record.
- Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn were inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame with the
largest audience to show up at the ceremony- 75,000 strong.
- Craig Biggio hit his 3000th hit. It’s also worth mentioning that he collected 5 hits that same game and the day he announced he would retire at the end of the season, he hit a
game-winning grand slam.
- Greg Maddux became the first pitcher to earn 10 victories in 20 consecutive seasons.
- Frank Thomas hit his 500th home-run
- Ichiro Suzuki hit the 1st inside the park home-run at an All-Star game.
- Luis Castillo set the record for most consecutive errorless games played at second
base (which was later broken by Placido Polanco…all in the same season!)
- Matt Cain is the first pitcher since 1988 to have an ERA under 3.80, a 30% Win-Loss
percentage and at least 150 innings pitched. His record so far is a whopping 5-13 but
he posts an ERA of 3.78. The Giants are really struggling with the run support.
