Sonic Youth is preparing to release a collection of rarities gathered from its back catalogue. The album is due out on December 12. It is titled The Destroyed Room: B-Sides and Rarities. The album will finish off the band’s contract with Geffen Records. A track listing has not been confirmed.
Jon Lech Johansen has cracked the Apple FairPlay copy-protection technology. This would allow companies other than Apple to sell music that is playable on iPods. It would also allow competitors a chance to sell devices that could play music purchased at the iTunes store. Apple’s profits have grown in the past few years based on the sales from the iPod. Johansen, also known as DVD Jon, first became known for breaking the encryption codes on DVDs.
Adobe is releasing a beta of its new audio-editing software. The new software is meant as an alternative to Audition, the company’s other audio program. The new program is called SoundBooth, and was created for people who are not audio specialists. SoundBooth features a different user interface which borrows from other Adobe products. The software is targeted towards video editors and web designers. It is expected that it will be included in future releases of Adobe’s Creative Suite.
