Do you want to save time editing your videos?

Software Review: Adobe Premiere Elements 10

Adobe Premiere Elements 10 is the latest release of the consumer-based video editing program from Adobe. It is a scaled-down version of their professional level package Premiere Pro and provides a lot of power for the consumer without all of the learning curve of its bigger brother. It is available as a stand-alone package or it can also be purchased as a bundle with Adobe Photoshop Elements for a significant savings.

Like Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements is a lot easier to work with and a lot more manageable than Premier Pro and while it has fewer capabilities than Pro, the features that it does have, are more geared toward, and better serve the general consumer and even the low-end prosumer as well. To find out what you need to run Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, just check out their requirements page.

So what is new with this version of Adobe Premiere Elements?

• Turn photos to movies – and bring them to life. You can take your static photos and give them the feel of video through the use of the new Pan and Zoom tool. This gives you new freedom to control motion, switch up the ordering, and even focus on specific things for a longer time.

• Adjust colors – and now you can also brighten up flat color in your video footage. The problem usually is that when you update the color in video, it messes up the skin tones, but now with the new AutoTone & Vibrance tool, you can boost tone and vibrance without affecting the skin tones.

• Boost color – in specific areas. Rich color can spell the difference between a video that is dull and one that really pops. Through the use of the Three-Way Color Corrector, you can independently adjust colors throughout your movie. Especially in specific areas like highlights, shadows, and mid-tones. You can also use sliders to adjust the color giving you complete control.

• HD quality movies – can now be burned to standard DVD disks using standard DVD burners as well as through the use of Blu-ray, but by using standard you can watch HD movies at a fraction of the cost.

• Share movies to Facebook – gives you the ability to shoot that soccer game, import it into Premiere Elements, and share it with your friends and family on Facebook – all without going back to the Organizer.

• Share movies to YouTube – just as soon as you import them or edit them first and then upload them direct to YouTube.

• Find photos fast – using the new Object Search. Here you can find based on a specific object such as a guitar to locate similar images. Also, the Elements Organizer which now lets you manage everything from one convenient place. It is accessible from both Premiere and Photoshop Elements and has been enhanced to use organizer tabs that will help you sort, tag, and search your photos.

• Export in AVCHD – now lets you export your high definition footage that you imported from your camera and share your movies in AVCHD format. This is important as the consumer market continues to move in the direction of HD camcorders.

• 64-bit Windows 7 Support – gives you the ability to edit with much more speed and stability with the support of Windows 7 64-bit processing

Adobe Premiere Elements 10 has some really good improvements especially with the Three-way Color Corrector. This is based off the technology from its big brother Premiere Pro and it may be just the thing to make this update worth it. Add to that the Auto Tone and Vibrance as well as the Facebook and YouTube uploading, you have a good upgrade.

I had some problems with the speed of the Organizer when working with the auto-analyzer in that it seemed to slow things down quite a bit. The Pan and Zoom can help you make little movies and really makes it easy. One other thing to note is that the 64-bit support is for Windows 7 only, not for Vista, but for video rendering, it really did speed things up and it worked quite well. If you are looking for the faster performance a Windows 7 64-bit system can give you, better color correction, and better uploading capabilities, then Adobe Premiere Elements 10 will deliver.
