I’m a huge fan of the television program Biggest Loser. For those that aren’t familiar with the series, it chronicles the weight loss journey of a group of overweight people. They attempt to lose weight by dieting and exercising and compete against another group of people to see who can lose the most weight. Being someone who recently dropped 40 pounds and hit her goal weight, weight loss and maintenance is a HUGE passion of mine.
Simply Sensible is a line of refrigerated meals that have been certified by the American Heart Association and licensed by NBC’s The Biggest Loser. I think I’ve tried just about every diet meal product known to mankind. What makes the Simply Sensible meals different is that they are freshly created and never frozen. They incorporate the Sous Vide cooking method that allows natural flavors to develop and provides a longer shelf life with less sodium and no preservatives. The meals are found in the refrigerated section and because they aren’t frozen, they are easy to prepare and ready in just a few minutes – unlike the 40 minutes that many diet frozen meals require.
I also appreciate that each Simply Sensible meal option serves two people. Many people are dieting or trying to eat healthier along with a spouse and this allows them to prepare one meal for both people. All you need to do is add in a cup of vegetables or a tossed salad and you have a complete, healthy meal for two. Because it isn’t frozen, there is no need to include a plastic tray like many frozen meals do. The meal is enclosed in a plastic bag that was designed to improve convenience and reduce environmental impact. It is fully cooked and can be heated in either the microwave or on the stove top.
Simply Sensible meals are available in five different varieties. Zing Chicken with Brown Rice is 230 calories per serving and contains 1.5 grams of fat per serving. Beef Pot Roast and Gravy with Mashed Potatoes has 200 calories per serving and 5 grams of fat per serving. Beef Tips and Gravy with Brown Rice has 200 calories per serving and 3.5 grams of fat per serving. Meat Lasagna has 200 calories per serving and 5 grams of fat per serving. Mediterranean Style Chicken with Bowtie pasta has 250 calories and 6 grams of fat per serving.
I received the Beef Tips and Gravy and the Zing Chicken for review. I prepared both on the stove top and was very pleased that they were heated through in about 5 minutes. This is perfect for those busy nights when I don’t have a lot of time to make dinner. The meat was tender and very flavorful and the rice was exactly the right texture. I have had a bunch of different frozen diet meals and these far surpassed those for taste and texture. Even my husband, who does not eat diet meals enjoyed the Simply Sensible meals. He couldn’t even tell they were for people who were watching their weight. He especially appreciated that there were real chunks of meat in these dinners and not tiny little pieces.
Simply Sensible meals will be available in grocery stores nationwide beginning in January 2011. It’s expected to retail for $6.99 for a two serving package.
