The Healthy Skeptic: Don’t Fall Prey to Hydroxycut’s Marketing Tactics

Part of: The Healthy Skeptic

The Hydroxycut weight loss supplement has been on the market for quite a long time now. Originally fortified with ephedra, Hydroxycut now contains a cocktail of various substances, none of which have a bona fide weight loss pedigree. As a matter of fact, over a year ago I posted a critical review of the Hydroxycut formula; nothing has changed.

Hydroxycut’s latest advertising campaign features Brandy Flores, who has had a long career as both a fitness competitor and model. Flores has been part of several Hydroxycut ad campaigns over the past several years.

Despite the fact that Flores has been a pro-fitness competitor and one of the more attractive and fit women that you’ll ever see, Hydroxycut keeps telling us that she owes her great body to their weight loss formula. Over the years Brandy Flores has graced the magazine covers of Oxygen, Muscle & Fitness, Iron Man, Muscle Media and Natural Muscle Athlete, placed in the Jan Tana Fitness Competition (page down to the 1995 results) and has worked as a professional model, yet Hydroxycut’s latest ad wants us to believe that her weight loss - and her figure - is due to their product.

On the Hydroxycut website Brandy tells us how she owes her “transformation” to the inclusion of Hydroxycut in her routine and on the back cover of the May/June edition of Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine, we’re told how this woman who has been a fitness pro and professional model for over 12 years got “a stunning new figure and unlimited confidence” thanks to Hydroxycut.

In the print ad for Hydroxycut there is no mention that the “Before” picture of Flores was taken right after she delivered a baby, but we do get that relevant little tidbit of info on their web site. We’re told that Brandy’s story “is probably similar to that of someone you know. After having her baby, she wanted to lose some of her extra weight. She didn't have a lot of free time to herself with the recent birth of her baby, so she knew she would have to stay focused on maintaining her diet and exercise plan.”

    Nice article.

There is only one magic pill. Work hard, eat right!

I have instilled this work ethic in my 15 year old son who swims between 5 and 12 thousand yards per day six days a week as a comptetive swimmer.

In my opinion, that is the only way to get a body like that.

Something I just noticed in their TV ads, the people in several of their 'before' pics don't look all that overweight at all. Maybe all they'd need is a little toning, a little cardio. And some of the women's 'after' pics looked too skinny, as in unattractive and unhealthy.

hydroxycut helped me lose a little weight. But it also game me a kidney stone, which is something so horrific that I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

    Thanks!
I've been exersizing in gym for half year now, and keeping my mouth shut (food wize... ;-). Today someone from my gym offered to consider Hydroxycut for better results, and I'm so glad to have read this article before reaching to my wallet.

i know five different men that have used it and lost weight dramatically. if you take as directed and exercise daily with a balanced diet you will lose a lot of weight. i don't know how well it works for women though.
