Product Review: Periscope Lighted Folio for Kindle 1

My husband and I have been satisfied Kindle 1 users for over a year now. He loves the original Amazon-supplied Kindle cover and I do not. That puts me in the position of constantly keeping an eye out for new and improved Kindle covers.

One problem with the Kindle is the lack of a backlight, which makes it just as impossible (and bad for your eyes) to read in the dark as a regular old paper book. So when I saw that the folks who developed the Periscope Lighted Book Cover had come out with one to fit the Kindle 1, I was ecstatic!  I mean, a cover, book light, pad, and pen in one convenient folio — what could possibly be bad?

I went to the Web site and the Periscope Lighted Folio for Kindle 1 looked and sounded perfect:

Ideal for reading at home or on the road, simply slip your Kindle into the custom designed holder, pull up the retractable, twin LED reading light, and begin reading in any low light environment — in bed, on a bus, train, or airplane, as well as in a car or conference room.

When the box arrived we eagerly opened the package and the first thing I said was, "It's really big!"  Part of the beauty of the Kindle is its small size and easy portability.  You really can carry hundreds of books in a device no larger than a trade paperback, and I like the size.  The Periscope, however,  measures in at a whopping 8.25" x 7.5" for a device that only measures 7.5" x 5.3".

Then I picked it up and noted that the Periscope cover weighs as much — empty and without the three AA batteries required by the light — as the original Kindle cover with a Kindle in it!  I am currently using a fashionable red M-Edge Kindle Cover that has a pen and pockets and is slightly bigger than the original cover, but weighs the same, fits my Kindle well, and works well for me. Here is how the covers compare in size:

Obviously as a review this is my opinion and others may very well disagree. I would love some comments from people who use this and love it! Tell me why because I just don't see it.
