Perseids Meteor Shower Prime Time On Thursday Night

Part of: NewsFlash

The peak of the passing of the Perseid meteoroids will occur on Thursday night, which will also be a moonless night. These factors together will make Thursday a prime night for watching the Perseid meteor showers.

The Perseids visit every year but it's only every three years that a new moon and the shower peak coincide. The best viewing time for North American viewers will be Thursday night into Friday morning. The Perseid meteor shower "shooting stars" are the remnants of Comet Swift-Tuttle, which last visited the inner solar system in 1992. Every August, Earth passes through the "meteor debris" left behind along the orbit of the comet.

It is suggested the best way to view the shower is in a very dark, rural site. In this setting you could probably expect to see 60 or more meteors per hour.

Grab some blankets, lie down, and gaze into the northeast skies to enjoy the show.
