It used to be aspiring film and television makers had a very limited audience for showing their works. Outside the boundaries of their own college campuses, there was no place to gain an audience.
But, thanks to the Open Student Television Network, shows from Harvard, Brown, Duke, Ohio State and more are all available online anytime for viewing by the masses.
The network describes itself as the "only 24-hour global channel devoted exclusively to student-produced programming."
The network launched last month and features shows such as Harvard's student-produced soap opera "Ivory Tower" among an array of others. It has 30 member schools right now and programming that ranges from comedy to news and documentaries.
The new network is a major score for both viewers and the filmmakers themselves. Now, some of the best and brightest (and many some of the worst) upcoming film and TV creators have an outlet for their work. And, consumers of Internet watching have a place to turn for fresh material beyond what the networks can produce. Who knows, the next Joss Whedon might be out there.
