No More Lost Grannies?

By Mike Johnston

Do you have problems with wandering relatives? Or do you yourself sometimes lose your way on the trip home from work? If so then a company called McMurdo may have just the thing you need.

They have developed a personal distress locator called the Fastfind PLB (Personal Locator Beacon). The device is battery powered and is meant to be carried with you in whatever sort of extreme, rugged environment you are in (such as the Wal Mart parking lot).

If you get lost all you have to do is activate the device and it transmits a distress signal to orbiting satellites no mater where you are in the world. That transmission is routed to the emergency response team nearest your location.

It also transmits a homing signal on another frequency and personal id information. While it may be more than most people need it does seem to be just the thing for hunters, hikers and others who venture into the wilderness on an infrequent basis.
