Penn State University announced today it is going to revolutionize the music world with a ground-breaking agreement with the online music service Napster, a division of Roxio.
Speaking in California at the annual Educause meeting of thousands of information technology administrators from universities around the country, Penn State President Graham Spanier said the University has signed an agreement with Napster to launch a program in which Penn State will make Napster's Premium Service available at no cost to its students.
How long do you think it will take some bright engineering student to find a way to break Napster's security software?
Despite that, I think this is a good idea. A college-age students probably listen to and purchase more music than any other demographic in the country. Through Napster many artists will be able to get their music to listners who will appreciate it while still turning a profit.
I enjoyed sticking it to the recording industry by downloading illegal music. Every time I downloaded a new song I would think of it as redemption for the paper thin, over priced t-shirts, the $5.00 beers, and the $22.00 albums with only two goods songs on them.
But in the long run it was the artsits getting hurt, not the record labels and while getting your music for free is fun, it just isn't the American way. We pay for what we get in this country. We all got to cash in on the free music and in doing so forced a revolution in the way music is going to be sold to us.
The record industry got a wake-up call and boy did they need one. Now its time, however, to get behind some of these new companies like Napster and help them be successful before the RIAA sues every last one of us and we go back to the days of over-priced crap music.
Nobody wants that.
