    Thanks, man.
I just wanted to create friend's wedding DVD and this guide is the ultimate one.
I skipped the torrent part, but the rest is a must read for every newbie like me.
    Thanks again.

Good instructions and it works like a charm!

    One addition:

I had this probloem that the sound kept having
hick-ups when playing in my DVD-player... tried
all kind of tricks from various tutorials... eventually I figured it out.. Because my test movie
was so small, I decided to burn it to a CD-ROM rather than DVD-ROM. After trying several times, I tried to burn it to a DVD ... problem solved!!!

So my advise to others: use a DVD and not a CDROM

    regards,
    Bruno

I'm trying to prepare myself for a huge change in operating systems ( XP to slackware ) BTW I'm a total newb! That said, as you may imagine this whole thing is rather Intimidating. I'm not a friend of the command line and haven't been since DOS and I was around 16 years old then. Needless to say I must admit one thing, the linux community is one the best I've ever encountered. People more than willing to set aside time to help newb's like me out. I loved your articile BTW and since I am pretty big into video I'm 100% sure that I will be returning here once I get slackware 12 running on this PC...Thanks Bro!

    Hi,
I know that this article is a few years old but I had been using Devede regularly on my desktop system and it has had a major upset like a board or something, so I am sitting here with an important conversion to perform on my Intel Atom powered netbook.

I loaded Devede and hit the go button but it came up with a Mencoder error. I used to use Avidemux occasionally for file conversions but was not aware of the "Auto" feature - couldn't see for looking I guess.

Thank you so much because I didn't know what settings to enter for a DVD and your "Auto" tip has been invaluable and will keep me out of trouble until I get the desktop sorted out. It will be interesting to see how long it takes the netbook to crunch it. I bumped the memory up to 2Gb and added a 500Gb hard drive so it should be ok there but I reckon those little processors will be working their butts off!

Thanks once again and kind regards,
    Randee

Just checked and the information on the conversion window estimates a bit over four hours which is not so bad, the Xvid file is about 1.3Gb. I am heading to bed soon so hopefully I will wake to a good result.

For Jonny above, I think the writer was referring to the time it would take to download a full movie, rather than the conversion time.

The conversion time has a lot to do with the size of the job and what conversion you are doing. In some instances the software needs to do little more than rearrange the components a bit and change the file extension, other times it has to re-encode both the video and audio.
