I Want My, I Want My, I Want My CBC - Page 3

As I write this, I am listening to the CNN feed, which is a guy in a helicopter just talking about what he sees in the devastation and it’s been going on for more than 15 minutes now. BORING. When there’s nothing left to tell, just go to other news, there’s more crap going on in the world that deserves some attention. Not just cameras pointed at NOLA and aimlessly feeding us the disaster. The “Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism” is still going on and I wouldn’t be surprised if the US admin isn’t taking advantage of this moment where everyone’s heads are turned. The south of France is about to get hit with violent storms and flooding also. Enough of the endless improvisation in front of the camera, where it becomes so redundant that the newscasters end up making a joke of themselves and will inevitably end up in Jon Stewart’s mire of ridicule (Oh how I adore Jon Stewart)

I want my CBC back, with journalist reporting the news and giving hard-hitting questions and comments to corporations and governments. CBC being the social tool, not the conservative puppets the likes of FAUXNEWS. I want current events shows, not talking to us like retards and indoctrinating us on whether you are an extremist or not, on what is a true patriot, but rather slapping around corporations and politicians, trying to get them to actually answer a question without evasion. I want my CBC, that isn’t impressed by pundits like Ann Coulter and doesn’t let her get away with anything.

I’d love to see American 24 hour news outlets clean up their act and rediscover journalism and leave behind Vaudeville. I’d love to see serious discussion on shows other than fake news shows. You know the news media is in trouble when a fake-news show hosting comedian kills your shows just by showing up as a guest.

Now just gimme my CBC Newsworld back…

23 hours of Whedon? What did they show?

Thanks for this report on TV news from abroad, Jeliel!

    Hey, Berlin.

Did you see the trailer for that new Joss Whedon space movie yet? I forget what it's called, but it's coming in the fall.

I have to admit, it didn't look good to me and I was groaning at the bad jokes and the Star Wars-looking action snippets before the voice-over guy said it was from Joss Whedon. Is it based on Firefly? I couldn't get into what I watched of that. When I knew it was by Whedon, I sort of tried to appreciate the punchy dialogue moments in the trailer more, but I wasn't feeling it.

Maybe Whedon will have better luck with the big screen than he did with the forgettable Buffy movie which preceded the far superior TV series. That's his only movie before this one, right?

There'll never be a Buffy movie because Sarah Michelle Gellar's too good for that role now, but I'd love to see an Angel movie after "Bones" gets cancelled and David Boreanaz looks for a paycheck.

    That is all.

Serenity is based on the brilliant Firefly, and it looks to be too maddeningly fantastic for words.

Go rent Firefly's complete series on DVD, Bob -- def-ly worth your time.

Best prospects for Buffy-verse at present are some made-for-TV films starring the great Spike.

Whedon's original film version of Buffy was so hacked asunder by outside forces that it's unfair to tie it to him.

He's written a ton of movies and been a script doctor on a ton more. He's also slated to direct a remake of Wonder Woman.

James Marsters is playing some bad guy on Smallville this season. It'll be interesting to hear him speak without the British accent and to see him look less Billy Idol-ish. Spike was rad.

Networks don't do made-for-TV film specials anymore, unfortunately. You rarely see that, if ever, especially with so many mid-season replacements and new reality crap filling up the schedule even during the summer.

Angel would make a good movie because the show ended the way it did, with everyone intact and battling on against the big bad evil things.

Looking at IMDB, Joss has doctored some interestingly diverse scripts, including "Alien: Resurrection" and "Toy Story." I'd love to see those episodes of "Roseanne" he wrote as well.

I'll give "Firefly" another chance, but I don't really like space sci-fi. Vampires are neat-o, though.

    That is all.

Firefly is character-centric for an action-oriented show, like most of Whedon's stuff, which is what makes it special.

Whedon is famously uncredited for rewriting large chunks of Speed. He would also be brought in to rewrite at the last moment, so that there would be a whole new dynamic in the dialogue you hear while a character's back is turned.

    Cool, eh?

First just so there is no confusion that's not me above (gypsyman). Second, I miss the C. B. C. as well. I'm sure neither those on the left or the right like will appreciate that most of us in Canada like the fact that there is a station that we can all listen to, that's not dependant on the bottom line for broadcasting into communities. Without the C. B. C. none of our Arctic or other remote locations would ever have any radio or T. V.

Not everybody can or wants to have satellite service.

The Joss-a-thon (aka The Big Damn Marathon)

    - 3 episodes of Buffy
    - Entire Firefly series
    - 5 Final Angel episodes

    If I remember correctly.

Gypsy, what better options are they? CTV? Please. Otherwise it's the American news channels, and well... they suck.(No offense to any Americans, but your news is so geared towards ratings that the news gets lost in middle... somewhere.)

I'm sure that Gypsyman is one fo those people who thinks that Canadian boradcasting should be all private. I hate them. For all of it's faults - some internal and some imposed by successive governments - the CBC and particularly CBC Newsworld provide better coverage of current events than any of its Canadian competitors and most of the American networks. I too want my CBC!

CBC Newsworld isn't perfect, thats for sure, but it's the closest to it. And they are a lot less stuffy than they used to be.

Yeah Space has these marathons on every holiday. This one, called The Big Damn Marathon, is their biggest yet. They are usualy 12 hours. 23 hours of the Whedon-verse was quite the treat. And now all the space viewers are primed for the release of Serenity... I can't wait.

    It's just the Canadian MTV.

One of it's former VJs now has a current affairs show on the CBC and it rocks. This guy doesnt wear the suit and tie. He's got studed belt, studed nose rings, wacky hair and enough attitude that could impress Jon Stewart.

< cue jingle music > This is not your fathers CBC.
