You will need an account to submit to both Yahoo and Google. It's free.
MSN, the third of the big three search engines is completely different in the way that you need to submit to get your blog included.
You can submit directly to MSN to be included. You don't need an account, but you will need to submit manually because you will need to enter the characters on the page to make sure your submission request goes through.
MSN also offers an alternative that will help you get your entire blog included in its site results. Submit your blog to Moreover. If your site is included in Moreover, it should be included in MSN as MSN draws a lot of results from this news site.
Once you've submitted your blog to the top three search engines, forget about it. Your next step should be to ping your blog each time that you post to it.
Before you ping your blog for the first time though, make sure that you glance through the list of blog directories. You want to make sure you have submitted your blog to each of the directories listed. Also, some of the ping sites listed may not relate to your blog. Make sure you uncheck these before you ping.

Ping your blog each time you update.
These techniques will help you get about 80 percent coverage in the search engines. Once you've taken this step in your promotion, move on. Write press releases and articles and submit them to press release and article directories. Build links.
Successfully promoting your blog or website depends on consistent promotion. Promote regularly, and you will see results.

Your first objective is to make sure your visitors can easily navigate your website and quickly access your content. According to the web designer point of view If you try hard enough, you can probably come up with some funky style for a page with for example, a new wacky navigational menu. The problem is that everybody expects to see a web page layout follow certain basic rules; navigation sections have to be arranged in a certain way, links have to look a certain way ... being consistent makes the web site easier for the visitor to use. I am currently using wordpress as a platform for my personal blog entitled "Worlds Off the Beaten Path". Have submitted it to several blog and rss directories though only a few had approved my piece accordingly. Tried to install html tags of widgets on my sidebar nav but some of them won't reflect. I don't know if it is an issue with the tags themselves or with the platform.
Though this has been a very useful tip for me especially when I was just starting with my blog. Thanks a lot.

Leigh,
I would recommend that you check to make sure that the template you are using allows for widgets. It depends on the template. If the template isn't widgetized, it won't work.
You'll find the biggest collection of free templates that I know of here:
Try searching for Widget ready to see if you can find one you like.
Let me know if this helps, and thank you for posting!
Sincerely,
Jinger Jarrett

People say directory submission is dead. And maybe that's because they have seen the declining impact as opposed to what they used to do. BUT - This does not mean that you should not be doing it. Every link counts folks. So it is still a good part of your overall SEO strategy.
12 - Kevin
Well - I kinda think it is dead. I mean, it can have a place in your link-building strategy, if you are careful and thoughtful. But when people say it's dead I think they are referring to days gone by when that was ALL you had to do to rank. That is just not the case anymore. You need a much more content-focused strategy that thinks about the end-user.
13 - Evan
I don't know, I've been able to get a bunch of sites ranked using this approach. I would not totally rule it out.
14 - Walter
That is completely dependent on what directories you are talking about. Some are well ranked, ironically. Others are just a waste of time. Get Site Explorer and a good toolbar so you can tell the difference.
15 - Jose
I think this also depends on your industry. In the web hosting space, there are a TON of directories. Some of them even rank well. But in more small niche plays, I don't know that there are directories that are related.
16 - Betsy
I'm with Betsy. I say that every link counts. Even the stupid little tiny ones are good to have pointed at your site. Sure, they don't carry so much weight - but they still carry something.
17 - Walter
Like I said above - Every link does count, just some more than others. You need to be the high-ranked ones for any real push. But yes - I would not turn down ANY do-follow link at all. They all count.
18 - Walter
I don;t know. There are a bunch of debates over at SEOChat about if some links are just plain worthless. They contend that forum links (and perhaps blog comments) carry 0 weight.

I think serach engines submission is a bit out of date procedure. It used to be important, but now it's enough to submit to Google, Yahoo and, if it's blog, to a few major Blog SEs and that's it. The rest is not necessary.

Out of date - I think it's dead. There is not such thing as a search engine submission anymore. They all follow the links. The more powerful the link, the quicker it's found.
21 - Otimização de Sites
In my opinion one of the best ways to have your site or blog crawled and indexed is by external links and sitemaps.
Besides the time of indexing is faster, we still gain the link juice (from external links) and indexing of deeper pages (through sitemaps).
22 - Steve
its not out of date..still you can get placed your site in serach engine early if you submit your site in search engine..
