Hurricane Katrina not only left a mess behind when she left New Orleans and other Gulf Coast cities, she opened the doors for people to get involved.
From donations to the Red Cross and America's Second Harvest, money has begun to flow in. Clothes have been arriving by the boatload. Animal Rescue groups such as the Humane Society and others have stepped in to retrieve more than a few Fidos and Fluffies.
But perhaps the biggest push has come from celebrities. The NBC network had all three of its cable stations (NBC, MSNBC, CNBC) team up for a benefit performance in which famous people crooned and spoke between sets to say why those of us sitting at home should donate money to the cause.
CNN jumped on the bandwagon with Larry King hosting three hours of musical performances while the phone number of the Red Cross "crawled" across the bottom of the screen in hopes that many people would pick up the phone.
Another concert had celebrities who had ties to the Gulf Coast, such as Ellen DeGeneres and Morgan Freeman, asking for money.
Now Ebay has gotten into the act. It has partnered with Hewlett Packard to offer an online auction in an effort to raise money. Until September 29th, celebrity photos will be in an online auction. The highest bids will receive their photos signed by the celebrity who was photographed. They will also receive a Hewlett Packard 375 printer autographed by the celebrity. Bids will be matched by Hewlett Packard up to $1000.00.
