Mauritius is soon to change with the 21st century. Some time this year or early next it is to be the first nation in the world to become "one big hot spot." A whole country of wifi cafes with laptops churning out spread sheets and hot novels; internet access and world finance. What better place will there be for the weary traveler on their way from First World A to First World B? And soon thereafter, Mauritius may become part of the tough competition across the modern globe for one-upmanship in the digital age.
Rizwan Rahim, chief of ADB Networks, which is installing a wireless radio network on the lisland said, "If there's anyone who can do it, it's us." He reasoned that the 40 mile long Island is small and therefore easily could be a successful test with other islands of Africa following suit.
Mauritius would become Cyber Island and the minister of information technology "is confident in the potential " of the enterprise to provide "an engine of growth which can generate jobs and wealth creation."
Much of Africa has been hard put to support itself with the industries like sugar and textiles that are now fighting immense global competition. Mauritius wants to lead this part of the "developing world" into a more modern economy of tourism and technologically advanced computer and telecommunications centers.
Deelchand Jeeha, the minister of information technology said " It is our vision to transform Mauritius into a cyber-island.
Ebene, near the capital of Port Louis, has planned high tech parks and increased educational opportunities and training. They are looking for data backup, software development and call centers in a location more easily protected from terrorist attacks. The country sports democracy, stability and a mix of people speaking English, French, Indian, Chinese and Hindi.
There is now wireless service to 60% of the island. By 2006 they hope to have 90%.
Of course the CIA (who would believe them?) lists 2 substantial airports, 8 merchant marine ships and 1960km of paved highways. So they may have some work to do on the ground. See CIA
