A Review of the Website Galaxiki

By now, most regular web users are used to the term ‘wiki.’ Of course, the most notorious is Wikipedia. We understand the concept. Registered users contribute essays and articles to the online encyclopedia. A new website that is also wiki based is Galaxiki.

Galaxiki is not a compendium of science fiction lore. It does have some science fiction appeal. Here are some excerpts from it’s “About” page that will help us all understand: “Galaxiki is a web-based virtual and purely fictional galaxy project using wiki technology. … Galaxiki consists of over 1 million computer generated stars as well as their planets, moons and other orbital objects which are maintained by … volunteers filling the virtual galaxy with content - e.g. naming stars, planets and moons, editing/describing them, and describing their eventual life forms and their related history. … Galaxiki users are called ‘Galaxicians’."

Like the real galaxy, there’s a load of systems to choose from. The easiest way to get started is to click the ‘popular solar systems’ link on the home page. This takes you to a list of systems that users are working on. Click on the star and you get a list of planets with basic astronomical information about the planet, such as length of days and years. Click on the planet and you get more options. You can read the overview and learn about the ‘life forms’ on the world.

Once you’ve joined, you can participate in writing about and editing most of the planets in the Galaxy, as most of them are community owned. However, you also have the option of buying a star system. Once that is done, you alone hold power over it. No one else can edit your system. But choose wisely. There are many planets that state it would be unlikely for life to exist.
