Rosa Parks is about to break another precedent. On Sunday she will become the first woman ever to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., the Washington Post reports today.
The resolution was written and introduced by Sen. John Conyers (D-Mich.) and approved last night.
Ms. Parks will also be the second African-American ever to lie in honor at the Capitol. The first was Officer Jacob Chestnut of the U.S. Capitol Police, who was gunned down in the Capitol in 1998.
There will also be a memorial service at Washington’s Metropolitan AME Church on Monday morning; Ms. Parks’s funeral will take place in Detroit.
Her remains will remain in the Rotunda for public viewing on Sunday, October 30 and Monday, October 31.Powered by Sidelines
