The Republicans are nothing if not consistent. It was surprising to many Americans to hear the hawk, John McCain, sing his battle chant, “Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran” in 2007. It was more surprising several years later, when those of us who assumed he would be contrite over such irresponsible speech, to hear him continue with the “Bomb” chant.
The Republicans’ primary thrust these last several years has been to convey to voters that America is strong!! America can lick anyone anywhere; the strongest country in the world. The Republicans know that the average trusting American will respond to that macho creed. Never mind that the sole rationale for going forward with the bombing of Iran is the flaming rhetoric of Ahmadinejad. Words are the crime, destruction will be the price. We don’t consider that Ahmadinejad, like the American lawmakers, has to present a figure to hold the attention of the Iranian people. Ahmadinejad like the rest of us has to keep his job. Ahmadinejad is a cryptic speaker and rhetoric is rhetoric.
The Iranian president has made the point that since many of the powerful nations of the world have nuclear generators for their cities, clearly the modern state of Iran should have that capacity. The modern nations such as America make no bones about having modern generators, and modern weapons, yet insist that other nations be forcefully prevented from having the same luxury. America is willing to kill thousands or hundreds of thousands of innocent Iranian citizens to prevent that nation from having what we take for granted. And the cause for the cry to bomb Iran is based solely on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s rhetoric.
It was George W. Bush, and Dick Cheney, the Halliburton boys, who insisted we make a preemptive strike on Iraq. These profiteers ignored all the evidence and went forward with the killing and destruction. Inspectors on the ground in Iraq were granted full authority to search anywhere in Iraq. Joe Wilson investigated the idea put forth by Bush that Iraq was purchasing enriched uranium from Africa. Although he established in his work with the CIA that that suspicion was baseless, Bush nevertheless told the American people that the threat was great, and a strike was necessary. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis died defending their homes and culture.
One would think we might learn from these horrific past events. Mitt Romney is determined to maintain the exact same course. He supports a unilateral military strike against Iran. He won’t stand-by, he declares to the crowd in Israel, while the “Ayatollahs in Tehran” threaten to wipe the Jewish state off the map. The media in America has on occasion shown us views of Ahmadinejad making inspection of a modern nuclear reactor for the production of energy in Iran, and they suggest that bombs are being made.
It is of paramount importance, Romney believes, to give his full and complete support to the state of Israel. He ignores any rights of existence to the people in Palestine. This is completely out of sync with the Obama plan of respecting both nations, and trying to work out an accord that will satisfy everyone, and bring peace to the holy land.
Romney after many years of the same hostility continues to be “strong.” Bullies are strong until they take a beating. Then they mature, and hopefully begin to think. Romney would take on the entire Muslim world, and have no concerns about servicemen who will die, citizens of nations with a culture different from ours who will die. And lastly, he has no concern about the Muslim capacity to wage war on the continental United States, and possibly find weapons that will bring an end to our great era. America will spend billions, kill thousands, and be strong!
Romney sees the politics; he is blind to the physical realities of a world broken through hatred. We have to wonder how the Republicans can be so indifferent. How can they be so detached from reality? These are the same Republics who have stood shoulder to shoulder to obstruct every domestic program the president has proposed; and they remarkably have maintained that stand for four years!
Romney began his presidential campaign by insulting the English. He continues by insulting the Muslims, and Palestine. He tosses about remarks about Hezbollah, and Hamas, without even a semi-scholarly insight as to what those groups are about. Or what our enemies might be capable of. We continue to force our Christian/Judaic tradition, and our American culture on those who deeply hold alternative beliefs, and we don’t consider that they might have a real cause for which they are fighting.
The Republican party of today is not the party it was in years past. The GOP freely admits they are governing not for people, but for corporations. Some of these corporations are foreign held. Profit is the motive. Patriotism such as James Stewart defined in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a forgotten emotion. The average American is yet unaware of that loss. It has been said that “Once, to every man, and nation, comes a moment to decide.” Now may be that moment for the “Good ol’ USA.”
