The original UK series that spawned a spin-off and three remakes (so far) returns with its second and final outing with Life On Mars: Series Two. At last, our hero Sam (John Simm) finds out whether he’s been “mad, in a coma, or back in time.” In the meantime, though, Sam is still stuck in 1973, forced to reckon with the most ill-tempered and unprofessional police officers England has to offer.
While Life On Mars: Series Two carries on the fun and excitement of Series One, I found this series to be a little lacking in some departments. Perhaps the thrill had simply worn off between viewings. Or, maybe the writing wasn’t as catchy this time ‘round — after all, there is only so much anyone could do with this sort of material without repeating themselves. Either way, it was still a blast, and I’m very much looking forward to the US release of the spin-off series, Ashes To Ashes.
Acorn Media brings Series Two to DVD in the US, with another stellar anamorphic transfer full of sharp colors and deep contrast. The four-disc set gives viewers a choice between a 5.1 and 2.0 English audio mix, and SDH subtitles are included. Special features include a documentary, behind-the-scenes footage, and a featurette.
