Johnny Depp normally turns me away from movies. However, Depp’s performance in Pirates of the Caribbean was enough to give me reason to cut the guy some slack. This movie almost takes up all that slack. But upon reflection, it wasn’t Depp’s performance that kept me from enjoying this film; it was the slow-moving pace of the film itself.

I can tell you that this is a fair remake of the classic. I can tell you second-hand that this is a fair version of the original stories by Roald Dahl. Unfortunately, I can’t suggest that you see this film, at least not in theatres.

Among its many problems is how nothing interesting happens in the film. There are some interesting special effects, and there are some interesting twists and spin-offs from the original film. But the only thing I got from this film was fatigue. I remember at one point wanting to walk out of the theatre due to boredom.

However, I must admit that I was in the minority. When the film was over, it received applause in that Midwestern theatre.

I suggest waiting to rent or own. This movie’s above-average special effects will work well on a small screen as they do on a large one.

  • They gave it applause when I saw it, too. I wasn’t as impressed with it as they were, however.

i think jonny depp is the best male actor in movie history. when he played jack in pirates of the carrabean i thought he was great! i can’t believe that danny elfman wanted to give hom some slack! why oesn’t he pickmon some one else who isn’t working as hard as poor jonny!

  • if it was anything it was johnny who made the film a success. You can’t expect much action from a movie that has a well-known plot to follow and that which requires exquisite sets. And for heaven’s sake, there can’t be any other male actor who could pull off the role of willy wonka as well as johnny did.And that’s a fact that no one can discredit!!! So i think danny elfman has to be a little kinder with his critiques.

  • Yeah, I shouldn’t have posted up this review at all. After I got done with the movie my friends asked me why I didn’t like it, and I couldn’t explain it at all. AS I was writing the reivew, same thing.

I just hate paying for a movie and not writing a review.

I thought the movie was great. Johnny Depp is a great actor. Tim Burton did an excellent job in recreating this movie. Some have said it was darker than the original movie. I disagree. This version is much brighter, in my opinion. Freddie Highmore gets the thumbs up.
