This week we learn the difference between a 2-Disc Widescreen Special Edition and a Widescreen 2-Disc Special Edition: about two bucks.

King Kong (2-Disc Widescreen Special Edition)

It’s difficult to contemplate trying to contain the epic scope of this cinematic experience on a screen that would fit inside any conventional home. On the other hand, you get to skip less impressive first third and cut right to the good stuff. That is to say, you can watch the Kong/T-Rex battle over and over and over. Peter Jackson’s near-masterpiece was considered a disappointment by some because it didn’t have the critical or box office clout of the LOTR films, but that’s kind of like quibbling over Led Zepplin II because it’s not Zoso. Home viewing may actually accentuate the intimacy of Andy Serkis’ and the Weta Digital team’s breakthrough performance as Kong and the chemistry (yes, chemistry) between Kong and Ann Darrow (a magnificent-as-usual Naomi Watts). Really, there’s little reason not to grab this DVD, though it may tempt you to buy a bigger TV.

There are over three hours of post-production documentary on the second disc, a piece on 1930’s New York, the recreation of which is one of the film’s towering achievements, and a history of Skull Island, which should be interesting considering they created an intricate backstory for the destination before creating it. Less impressive, I imagine, is the featurette on the first disc titled “The Volkswagen Toureg & King Kong.” Ugh. Did those commercials have to happen?

Memoirs of a Geisha (Widescreen 2-Disc Special Edition)

This film won no less than three Oscars, so if you want to see a movie with outstanding art direction, cinematography, and costume design, look no further. If, on the other hand, you want a film that’s been described as “soapy” and “bland” and ranks somewhere near Saw II in the estimation of most critics, look no further. Geisha is one of those films that gets Academy love in spite of bad reviews because it looks and feels like an Important Picture. This does not always work. See Alexander. You can only be so bad. And, to be fair, the performances in the film were generally applauded. But good acting does not a film make.

There are no less than 11 featurettes, most of which (including the story of how they recreated Kyoto in Southern California) look more interesting than the actual movie.

Robot Chicken

Like House before it, Robot Chicken is one of those shows that I’ve been told time and again I should watch, but never got around to. (By the way, when I finally did get around to House, I got hooked). So I’ll put it out there to those of you who haven’t seen it yet – watch this, see how good it is, then bug me to watch it, and maybe I finally will.

Adult Swim’s lauded stop-motion toy extravaganza comes to DVD with commentary, behind-the-scenes footage, and deleted scenes among its myriad extras.

Get Rich or Die Tryin’

It must have seemed like a good idea at the time. 50 Cent is basically Eminem, right? And Jim Sheridan is certainly as capable a director, if not more so, than Curtis Hanson. So why couldn’t this be 8 Mile Redux? Because it sucked, that’s why. 50 Cent is not Eminem (and whether that says more about Fiddy or Eminem is anybody’s guess). And the film lacked the quality of its counterpart (seriously, check out 8 Mile) and so died commercially and critically.

What appears to be the sole extra, a featurette called “A Portrait of an Artist – The Making of Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” can really only leave the viewer asking “Do we really want to invoke Joyce here? Really?”

A Sound of Thunder

Speaking of wasted potential, what happens when you take a halfway-decent Ray Bradbury story and give it to three screenwriters, one of whom wrote Tomcats, and the director of The Relic as a vehicle for Ben Kingsley, Edward Burns and a bunch of crappy fx? This. Still, I have to admit, this is totally the kind of movie I’d watch at 3am if I found it while flipping around cable.

It took long enough, but two of the Peanuts films are finally here along with a bunch of other movies in this week’s long list.

    “a halfway-decent Ray Bradbury story”

Since when is the short story A Sound of Thunder “halfway-decent”????????

The biggest problem was that this short story was done excellently as an episode of Ray Bradbury Theater. There was no hope in turning this GREAT story into a halfway-decent movie, so it should have never been done.
