It’s a good week for documentaries starting with the letter M.

March of the Penguins

When this first came out, I predicted that it would make a whopping $200,000. I was, how do you say, completely and totally wrong. At this point, it’s made over $75 million and holds the record as the second most successful doc of all time (behind last year’s surprise docbuster Fahrenheit 9/11). I say “at this point” because it’s still in a few theaters here and there. And I still haven’t seen it. That will all change, though, with this DVD release.

Extras include something called “crittercam” and a hilarious Bugs Bunny cartoon with a penguin, “8 Ball Bunny” (Bonus points if you can name the first Bugs Bunny cartoon with that same penguin).

Murderball

Excellent, underseen doc about quad rugby, where the “quad” is short for quadriplegic. That’s right. Flick goes beyond the rough and tumble sport to become a larger story about all the misconceptions that surround quadriplegics, from the banal to the provocative (that is to say, from how you do dishes to how you get it on). Full review here.

Lots of cool extras, including a special with player Mark Zupan and the stars of Jackass (which, when you get to know Zupan, makes perfect sense), an update on Joe Soares, the cantakerous (to put it nicely) coach of the Canadian team, filmmaker and player commentary, and coverage of the New York premeire that ties up a loose end from the story.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

From the “better than expected” department comes this tale of a husband and wife who, unbeknownst to each other, kill for a living. When it becomes beknownst, the fun begins. It’s nothing more than a collection of funny set pieces, but so effectively pulled off by director Doug Liman (Swingers, Go, Bourne Identity) and the leads (Brad Pitt, in particular, shows how underrated he is as a comedian – see his turns in Ocean’s 11 and Snatch for further proof) that you don’t mind the lack of anything resembling a plot.

3 audio commentaries seems like a bit much, but I am curious to hear Doug Liman’s take on things.

Sky High

The presence of cult faves Dave Foley and Bruce Campbell in what otherwise appears to be an Incredibles rip-off indicates what lies beneath the surface: a surprisingly well-reviewed action comedy. Extras include an alternate opening for once (although The Incredibles disc has this too, hmm).

C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation – The Complete Fifth Season

By season five, CSI already had two spin-offs on the air. While not at the top of its game, the original was still the best. This season features the 100th, and arguably goriest, episode (three words: botched gender reassignment). On the other hand, this season offers what is easily the best. episode. ever. The season finale, a two-parter directed by none other than avowed CSI nut Quentin Tarantino, who also gets a story credit. Sadly, this does not appear among the many episodes with commentary, but it does get its own featurette. Actually, I think the producers stand to make a pretty penny just selling that episode as its own DVD, but what do I know?

Quentin Tarantino didn’t direct any of these, but I would like to see him do a muppet movie (a bunch of them are re-released this week).

I don’t quite get the whole releasing part of the season while it’s still going on thing, but, whatever, it’s a damn funny show. Includes what may be the best Peter monologue ever, wherein he lists all the shows Fox cancelled during the time Family Guy was off the air. Also, a killer schtick from Stewie involving Brian’s unwritten novel.

Little trivia note: in the American version of Kong v. ‘Zilla, Kong wins. In the Japanese version, Godzilla emerges triumphant. No idea which version this is.
