Region 1 DVD Releases for 20th September 2005

Some good docs, a decent re-release, and, well, let’s just leave it at that.

The Outsiders: The Complete Novel

We can talk about the irony of naming a DVD special edition a “novel” later. For now, just focus on the fact that this is probably a Coppola release that you want to own. It’s not just the cast, dewy-eyed soon-to-be-brat-pack hopefuls like Matt Dillon, Ralph Maccio, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane, Leif Garrett, and some guy named Tom Cruise. (Oh, and Tom Waits is up in here too, for some reason.)

Plus, there’s the inspiration for this release. Apparently, over the years, fans of the book have approached Coppola asking why particular scenes from the novel weren’t in the movie. As it turns out, most of those scenes were shot but never made it in. Now they are.

Along with that 22 minutes you have an all new intro and commentary from Coppola, plus commentary from Swayze, Maccio, Howell, Lowe, and Lane. (For some reason they couldn’t get Cruise). And that’s just the first disc. Second disc: 10 minutes of additional scenes, making-of doc, screen tests, cast members reading from the freakin’ book, and S. E. Hinton (doing what I don’t know).

Now that’s a special edition.

The Longest Yard

There are three kinds of Sandler films. One, the instant classic (Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer). Two, the “meh” diversion (Big Daddy, Anger Management). Three, the out-and-out suckfest (Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds). By most accounts, this, like so many of Sandler’s efforts, falls into the second category. Which isn’t surprising. Chris Rock, while an outstanding comedian (arguably the best working today – though Dave Chappelle is giving him a run for his money) has a horrible history with the silver screen. So combining him with Sandler, while a good idea at first glance, was in no way a guarantee of comedy gold.

There’s actually a fourth kind of Sandler film, which I like to call Director’s Choice, because they’re known more for the director than him. These include Punch Drunk Love (really, a Paul Thomas Anderson film) and Spanglish (really, a James L. Brooks film). Here endeth the Sandler taxonomy.

Mindhunters

Really, this should be called Mindhunters: A Study in Inevitable Disappointment. Here’s why. A while back (and I mean a looong while back – this was delayed interminably) Renny Harlin shoots a film called Mindhunters about an elite unit of FBI trainees learning how to be uber-profilers or something. Anyway, they’re taken to a remote island for their final test by Val Kilmer, their Mr. Kotter, and one by one they start getting whacked for real. Is it LL Cool J or Christian Slater or Johnny Lee Miller or one of the other character actors that you swear you’ve seen in something else before?

Point is, it’s not the world’s worst premise. Done well, it could even be kind of cool. And the writer did The Cooler. No Se7en, but not a terrible movie. And in spite of terrible signs like “directed by Renny Harlin” and being delayed for over a year, the very early reviews were positive.

And then the rest of the reviews kicked in.

It should have been clear from the start that this didn’t have a hope in hell of being anything other than another serial killer formula knock-off with a wasted premise (see Suspect Zero) but I held out hope in vain. Sigh.

Director’s commentary will hopefully explain how Harlin’s been able to consistently get work after Cutthroat Island, Driven, Excorcist: The Beginning, and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

Born into Brothels

The Academy Award winner for Best Doc last year. ‘Nuff said. No special features, but the premise alone (children shoot their own footage of life in a red light district in Calcutta) should be enough to get you interested.

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan

Four hours on Bob Dylan covering 1961 to 1966 which, as any true Dylan fan knows, is a kind of important time in his career more worthy of the four hour treatment than, say, 1981 to 1986. But I haven’t told you the best part yet. It’s directed by none other than Martin Scorsese. Those of you who are fans of either or both, rejoice. Everybody else, trust me, they’re talented artists.

It’s hard to imagine tacking extras onto a four-hour doc, but there are some performances here of such classics as “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” and, if you’ve ever wondered what it sounded like when he sang it, “Man of Constant Sorrow.”

Don’t touch that dial…(does anyone even have a dial anymore?)

Like House, this is one of those shows that everybody and their mother says I should watch. It’s to the point now where I’m ready to overlook the stigma of the original which, at the time, felt like a Star Wars wannabe. Crapload of extras including the provocatively titled “Now They’re Babes.”

Ned & Stacy? COOL! I loved that show.

The kidlet will love the Spongebob CDs. (Hmm, his birthday is approaching…)

I’m going to have to 2nd that. Wow! Ned and Stacey. I didn’t think there would be a demand for a dvd of that show. I loved it, sadly no one else seemed to at the time it was aired.
