Perhaps to make up for last week’s weak selection, we have an embarrasment of, well, if they’re not all riches, they’re at least notable.

Veronica Mars: The Complete First Season

Remember how much I pimped Lost a few weeks ago? That’s almost how much I want to pimp this. Veronica Mars was the other breakout critical success of the last TV season and now you can see why (though why you can’t see in time for the second season, which has already started off strong, is beyond me). Basically imagine if Encyclopedia Brown were a chick and investigated slightly more hardcore cases like, say, the murder of her best friend and her own rape. And she did it all in a town caught in the grip of a class struggle. Throw in some excellent dialogue, crackerjack plotting, and engaging characters and you’ve pretty much got this show.

A lot of unaired footage in the extras, but sadly no commentary. For example, I’d have liked to see what drew action producer Joel Silver to this material.

Kingdom of Heaven

Before you start hatin’, keep in mind that there were a lot folks enamored with this re-telling of The Crusades, and many of the criticisms centered on the fact that the script tried to be too accomodating to all points of view. Better that than a racist tirade. Of course, better than both would have been a compelling film, but what are you gonna do? Saddled with the guilt of launching the Summer of the Slump (don’t get me started on the dubiousness of that rubric), this flick looks to make better on the home video circuit, what with nifty extras like a streaming text commentary to provide historical info, an “Interactive Production Grid” that looks to redesign the whole making-of featurette experience, and a couple of cable shows on the film from A&E and The History Channel.

Unleashed (Unrated Widescreen Edition)

From the “better than expected” category comes this Luc Besson-penned, Louis Leterrier-helmed actioner about a fighter (Jet Li) raised like a dog by a gangster (Bob Hoskins) and re-humanized by a caring family (Morgan Freeman and Kerry Condon). On the surface, this may seem like a redux of the far superior Besson masterpiece The Professional, and in many ways it is. But excellent performances (by Hoskins in partiuclar), outstanding fight scenes, and an only occasionally grating script help this rise above such comparisons.

Although it’s unclear if there are any extras here, my guess is the unrated version includes more bonecracking ass-whupping meted out courtesy of Li than an “R” could possibly hope to contain. Or maybe he just gets it on with that chick he stays with, who knows.

Kicking and Screaming

It has not been a good year for Will Ferrell. Perhaps the most critically and financially successful move he’s made was that cameo in Wedding Crashers. Both this and Bewitched failed to impress audiences or critics. But perhaps the fact that some of the extras are named after soccer penalties (outtakes are “Yellow Cards,” deleted scenes are “Red Cards”) or that one of the extras is called “Kickin’ It with the Kids” will tempt you. No?

Even if your movie has the word “kicking” in the title seven times, you should never, ever use the phrase “Kickin’ It” in the title of an extra. Or anything else. Ever.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Also from the “better than expected” category (but it has Bradley Whitford, so how can it not be good?), comes this romcom/female bonding flick about four teenagers who spend their summer apart but share a pair of mystical jeans that fit all of them equally well. The jeans, as far as I know, have no other superpowers, but if they could fight crime, I think that would make an awesome film. Even without that, though, critics seem to love this charmer, and the extras include a conversation with lauded author Ann Brashares, who wrote the source material, and something called “Suckumentary,” which just has to be good.

And, hey, anything that advances the career of the amazing America Ferrera (Real Women Have Curves) is fine by me.

Me and You and Everyone We Know

This festival fave stars Deadwood regular John Hawkes as a shoe salesman who falls for a performance artist (writer/director and, well, performance artist Miranda July) as his sons are having their own forays into the wacky world of sex. Noted for its frank depictions of teen sexuality and quirky comic center, this flick won the Camera D’Or at Cannes. Expect it to make quite a few Ten Best Lists at the end of the year.

Arrested Development: Season Two

“Did somebody say ‘Wonder?'”

The two best shows on television right now are Lost and this. See why. The second season is even funnier, if possible, than the first, with still more feats of smirking, snarky satire and deft self-reference than before. This season sees George Sr., go from the slammer to the attic of Michael’s model home, a new appendage for Buster, a long-suffering girfriend for George Michael, a never ending supply of jokes surrounding Tobias’ efforts to join The Blue Man Group, and the Best. Prop. Ever. in Gob’s ventriloquist dummy Franklin. Special guests include Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Thomas Jane, Zach Braff, and Ben Stiller as a magician named Tony Wonder whose tricks all involve, yes, Wonder Bread.

Included among the extras are commentary on several episodes including the hilarious “Good Grief,” which turns A Charlie Brown Christmas shout-outs into an art form.

You know it’s a full week when I have to relegate High Tension and Undead to the long list.

Yes, yes. Director Takashi Miike (Audition) is a genius and has all sorts of things to say about the nature of war and violence yadda, yadda, yadda. But this just sucked. Even Miike fans consider this one of his worst. The idea of an unstoppable guy jumping around time and killing the shit out of everything is kind of exciting for the first half an hour, but after the 2,000th random victim, you just want him to take a nap or something.
