One of the most gifted NFL receivers ever suddenly wrapped up his career.

Randy Moss Retires from Football at Age 34

Randy Moss, one of the most gifted wide receivers in NFL history called it a career yesterday after 13 seasons. He had been rumored to be on his way to signing with the New York Jets during the early period of the 2011 free agency frenzy, but that ultimately did not happen. Nor did significant offers from any other NFL team, given his recent history.

Thus, the controversial WR who spent the bulk of his career with the Minnesota Vikings, then the Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Vikings again and Tennessee Titans decided to quit the game quietly on Monday without much fanfare.

The six-time Pro Bowl WR broke Jerry Rice’s single season TD record during the 2007 season, catching 23 of Tom Brady’s passes in the end zone to help the Patriots reach a perfect 16-0 regular season. From there, his career steadily declined to the point where not only was his on-field production dropping, he made self-centered post-game comments, got caught up in contract disputes, and ultimately got traded out of New England in 2010 back to the Vikings.

He then got released by Minnesota after four games due to bizarre postgame and off-the-field behavior, which included complaining about a team caterer and criticizing the Vikings for not heeding his “strategic” advice. He finished his season quietly with the Titans, catching only six passes in eight games.

Moss, a future NFL Hall of Famer, finishes tied for second all-time in TD catches (153), is fifth all-time in yards received (14,858) and is tied for eighth all-time in receptions with 954.
