Ghandi's opinions on warfare were considerably more complicated than he's often given credit for these days. You might enjoy this long, but thoroughly engrossing review of Richard Attenborough's 1983 biopic, which discusses them--and Ghandi's history as a soldier--at length.
"Makes the whole world blind" is Jesus? What Bible are you reading? 8^)
What Jesus said: "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away."
What Gandhi said: "The law of an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

Yes, but those who pose a real and immediate danger, and who cannot be dissuaded from their path of hatred (9/11) basically must be captured or killed. I don't want to be blind or dead.

Man, that article by Richard Grenier is so full of jingoism, inconsistencies and plain old ignorance that I haven't stopped laughing yet. If Grenier were still alive, I'd take issue with him, but whats the point. Anyway, I have read other work by Grenier and I find him irritating in the extreme for his constant attempts at showing off his half-baked scholarship. Read the long and repititious article if you like, but keep some salt handy to help swallow the drivel masquerading as criticism.

Right. Because all our enemies want to do to us is give us the equivalent of a poke in the eye.
If Gandhi had been dealing with Saddam Hussein instead of the British, his empty skull would be a fucking paperweight on Saddam's desk. Grow up.
Gandhi was a great man, one of the few people in history who changed the world without resorting to weoponry or war.
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win " - GANDHI
"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall - think of it, ALWAYS" - GANDHI

Eric, that's why Romans says to "live at peace with your neighbor IF AT ALL POSSIBLE AS FAR AS IT DEPENDS ON YOU". Romans also says that Governments have the God given right to rule by the sword.

that sounds very reasonable and wise, Andy. Of course the question is where is the line for "as far as possible"

I take it as, if you've done everything in your power to prevent the use of violence and the threat still remains, then it's justified. I can only say take it case by case. You know in each situation if you have exhausted yourself trying to find a peaceful resolve.

That's Jesus, not Gandhi, and Jesus was talking about revenge.
