I am rarely surprised when it comes to elections like this and much will be written about the meaning of this recall. Roger Simon says we are witnessing the "death of the two-party system". Bill Wallo believes it is the "angry voter syndrome."
Although that would explain why the recall took place, it does not satisfactorily tell us why Arnold Schwarzenegger is now the governor. Consider this for a moment. Arnie never missed an opportunity to boast of his ambitions and made no secret of his aspirations for a political career. So was it merely coincidence that he married into the Kennedy Clan? Imagine, a would-be Republican candidate supported by the most powerful Democrat family in America. You couldn't ask for a better hollywood script or recipe for success!
Obviously there is something more going on here worthy of an x-file. Consider also the fact that he starred in the movie 'Total Recall'. Was it by chance that he chose to jump-start his political career on a recall against an unpopular incumbent? His first claim to fame was the star of 'Pumping Iron' and I can't help but appreciate the irony of it all (no pun intended ;-).
It seems to me we have taken this election way too seriously. No matter how the pundits analyze it, it all boils down to a simple denominator - and that is elections like this are more a popularity race than anything else. Regardless of what the issues were it was ultimately defined by a simple equation; flash + charisma + the anti-vote factor = win. It was meant to be from the get-go and the joke is on all of us so we should not be surprised of the outcome.
Arnie has proven himself to be a shrewd, calculating man, and a classic opportunist - qualities that are necessary to be a successful politician. Regardless of what the demonizers would have you believe we are dealing with an intelligent man who appears to know what he is doing. He is now the duly elected governor so it is time for us to get over it and move on. He will have an opportunity to prove (redeem) himself and my gut tells me that whatever Arnold applies himself to he can do well. I just hope for California's sake that also includes
So rule well Arnold, but remember this - we will be watching.
