Just as the Bush White House has never been able to convince the majority of Americans that the War on Terror and the Iraq War are part of the same fight — the American people see through the partisan politics of Mr Rove's statements in New York.
And as Republicans rally 'round Rove — they may not notice the damage he's done to the Party. The base, staunch Democrats and Republicans, make up only about 20% each of the electorate. It's that vast, 60% of independents and moderates who ultimately decide what's best for America.
As another Republican — far smarter and infinitely more eloquent that Mr Rove once said:

Your article about karl rove was spot on - we are all americans unified against terrorism. His cowardly attempts to divide us will not work in the end. I am a republican and I asm ashamed of him and bush. Perhaps rove should remember that many good democrats and liberals, such as my father, fought in WW2 to defeat an enemy under the leadership of another democrat, FDR, who knew how to win a war(unlike bush) and who knew who the real enemy is (unlike bush re downing street memo.

Karl Rove would be a scandal and a shame to any party who utilized him, not just the Republicans. The sorry part is, the GOP - and the President especially - have counted him among their nearest & dearest, thus revealing their own current state of moral/ ethical bankruptcy (or desperation, or cynical ruthlessness), since even a cursory look at Rove's 'career' in lies, slander, libel, and dirty tricks in general makes pretty sordid reading. Had the Dems employed him first, they would have been equally stained by close association w/Rove. He's a disgrace as a human being, not because he's R or D.
