What business, what right does any government body have to be making official condemnations of religious rallies?
Last Friday and Saturday, March 24-25, a fellow named Ron Luce and his Texas-based organization Teen Mania held a big old evangelical Christian youth rally at the AT&T Park in San Francisco. They had something like 25,000 folks there as part of a "reverse rebellion" tour. He wants to turn loose a bunch of new youth ministers to help the homeless, evangelize for Christ, and so on. DJ, as to my idea of "tolerate," you might be interested in THIS. Short version, I'm hip to the difference between tolerate and agree.
I'm all in favor of saying what you think. I wouldn't care if Councilman X stood out on the sidewalk saying that these people are no good so and sos. It's when they specifically start doing so in their official capacity that I've got a problem with it.
This youth group no doubt figured that Soddom was a particularly good place for a rally. That seems reasonable enough from a Christian perspective. They seem to have been pretty respectful guests while they were there, though, from anything I read.
Again, I'm not defending the "free speech zones" business, which certainly has an Orwellian ring for starters. Still, there are people who want to disrupt the speeches of the president or others that they don't agree with. They'll push the point as far as they can get away with, so security ends up having to push back. But then they've been known to use that as an excuse to push back even some stuff that should be considered perfectly reasonable protest. We're probably not really in much disagreement there.
