The left is on the defensive (or offensive — take your pick) again.
Based on his title and content, left wing professional Markos Moulitsas in his American Taliban: How War, Sex, Sin, and Power Bind Jihadists and the Radical Right (not reviewed by myself) thinks it is clearly time for the left to "go to the matresses" a la The Godfather.
The left's offensive is a losing proposition, in my opinion. Some reviewers are painting this book, filled with ad hominem attacks from the right's noise machine and abhorred by the left, as a gut reaction, no more, no less. I mean Markos is not as cute as Coulter, not as gay as Rachel Maddow, nor as witty as Mark Levin, but he tries. But, I am unable to vouch for his latest attempt at setting the record straight.
The problem with the progressive movement is that if it leans too far to the left, it risks alienating true independents like myself who vote with the winner, regardless of party affiliation. (/irony)

This reminds me of how I look at, football. Since I don't understand the game at all, I find myself always rooting for the winner...isn't that more fun and safe?

The issue here is the term "progressive". Teddy Roosevelt defined progressive both individually and politically. Leftist or left-leaning hardly descibes TR.
As to the term "independant", it sounds good. It is, however, not a political party. It hasn't been a movement for 100 years. It has no primaries,no agenda, no platform, no position and worst of all it has no mascot.
TR's Progressive Party did -- a Bull Moose.

In one sentence you mention "ad hominem attacks from the right's noise machine," as if you disapprove.
In the very next sentence, you say Markos is "not as gay as Rachel Maddow."
Let me put it this way. Isn't that both ad hominem and homophobic?
