Pentagon Fears Release Of More Abuse Images

The New York Times reports that the Pentagon is worried about releasing more images of abuse carried out by US troops:

"I condemn in the strongest terms the misconduct and abuse depicted in these images," General Myers said in the statement. "It was illegal, immoral and contrary to American values and character."

Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein authorized the A.C.L.U. yesterday to make public papers it filed on Aug. 3 contesting the Pentagon argument that the images must be withheld because they put individuals at risk. The A.C.L.U. said the government was seeking to withhold the photos only "to avert adverse reaction," undermining the information act.

A reminder of what Republican senator, Lindsey Graham had to say, after viewing some of those images the Pentagon is hiding away:

"’The American public needs to understand we're talking about rape and murder here. We're not just talking about giving people a humiliating experience,’ Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told reporters after Rumsfeld testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee. ’We're talking about rape and murder — and some very serious charges.’

Odd, you forgot to mention a couple of important aspects of the release of these pictures. First, they are just more pictures of the already documented crimes at Abu Ghraib. Second, the people involved are either already tried and punished or in the process of being tried and punished.

Strange - reading your article it sounds like we're talking about new and different and worse cases of abuse, when in fact that's not the case at all.
