Pervez Musharraf rejoices as the most charismatic and controversial insurgent leader of South Asia reaches the end of his fascinating life story.

"Instead of a slow death in bed, I'd rather death come to me while I'm fighting for a purpose."  Nawab Bugti in 2006

In the Saturday night of August 26, 2006, Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti was killed in a military operation in the region around Kohlu near Dera Bugti in the gas-rich Pakistani province of Baluchistan. He was 79.…

All you people are big fools, the ones against Bugti and the ones for him, you're all missing out on the greater picture! Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti is Pakistan's greatest THINK TANK and asset, I say 'is' because he is still very much alive and I cant believe all of you actually fell for that big drama, that big farce displayed by the pakistan government. Bugti is the name of that man who is always one step ahead of his enemies, so what if the tiger grew old, you forget, he even grew wiser. He is not stupid. He played his foes well and now the world thinks hes dead, which is exactly what he wanted. How is it possible for him (when his life is most important for the Baloch) to be in the area of conflict while his two grandsons and Nawab Khair Baksh Marri’s son Balach Marri are not there but far far away? And, its not possible that Bugti was killed alone in the operation, he was never ever alone. Whatever happened to the dead bodies of the 50-60 men who died fighting with him, or their live bodies for that matter? Bugti never wore a ring, nor did he possess a wallet, yet the army claims to have found these things on his supposed dead body. And, what takes the cake the most is that the cave collapsed and everything underneath it was crushed beyond recognition, yet the authorities found his personal effects such as his watch and spectacles intact? Fine, after that they said nothing happened to his face and legs then why wasn’t his face shown on television or even atleast to the journalists and media people who were present at that burial (fake burial) to confirm that it was indeed Akbar Bugti? And, if that was indeed his body, why wasn’t it just simply sent to Quetta where his whole family was? The question to all of this is very simple, it was not Akbar Bugti’s body. Whose minds are these people playing with? The Pakistan government and army’s ship has completely sunk. They’re doomed.

Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti's two grandsons Brahamdagh and Mir Aali (Addu) Bugti are not in Afghanistan, Iran or India, they're very much still inside Balochistan. A few months ago the government had also claimed that Akbar Bugti fled to Iran which was completely baseless as he was in Kohlu district (when they supposedly killed him) which borders Dera Bugti. Sources close to the family tell us that Mir Aali is still in the mountains of Kohlu while Brahamdagh is operating from a camp outside Kohlu. Senator Agha Shahid Bugti’s son Tabish Bugti left his maternal grandfather Akbar Bugti in the mountains for Dubai and from there to London in April. Akbar Khan’s nephew Fahad Bugti made a deal with the government and gave himself up on the condition that his brother Murtaza Bugti and cousin Bilal Bugti would be freed from the custody of the intelligence agencies. Nothing like that happened and now even Fahad’s whereabouts are unknown. Recently the government even stated that there are still some 50 'ferari camps' in Kohlu which are fully operational. Both (Aali 30) and (Brahamdagh 25) men still enjoy the support of their grandfathers guerrilla fighters who continue to fight for right of self-determination and complete provincial autonomy and full control over their resources. The government is just trying to divert peoples attention, at the same time trying to show that a 'foreign hand' is exploiting the whole situation, a tactic which has grown old. The Baloch cause is genuine. There have also been recent reports that Akbar Bugti's youngest son Shahzwar Bugti (23) has taken to the mountains to engage in guerrilla warfare. Tehmina Daultana brought up the issue in the National Assembly of Shahzwar's kidnapping by the ISI or MI earlier this month (September) and also Akbar Bugti's two nephews Bilal Bugti and Murtaza Bugti but the government reply to this allegation was that Shahzwar Akbar Bugti was not nabbed by the intelligence angencies but instead he took to the hills himself to fight against the state. It is worth noting that Shahzwar Bugti was last seen in Quetta on 8th September 2006. Shahzwar poses to have been kept away from politics and tribal affairs but he infact went to Dera Bugti and from there to Kohlu on many occassions to take training in guerrilla war from the Marri's on the command of his father. Nawabzada Balach Marri himself supervised the training and taught Brahamdagh and Shahzwar what he learnt in Moscow and Afghanistan. The last time Shahzwar ever saw his father was before leaving for Karachi on the 13th, just four days before Akbar Khan was attacked on 17th. March in Dera Bugti. Akbar Bugti was smart, he kept this particular son out of the limelight, Shahzwar was a chip tucked away which was to be used much later in the big game.
Talal and Jamil Bugti, the older sons of Akbar Bugti are posing to have nothing to do with the rebels in the mountains but Talal is actually financing the rebels using Shahzwar as a bridge while one of Talal's sons Shahzain Bugti (25) is taking care of the 'money transfers' and all from Karachi while his other son Gohram (21) is doing the same from Dubai. Shahzwar lived in Karachi and also spent much of his life in Europe, he even received a ‘sports degree’ last year from London. He has always been clean to the extent that nobody can dig up any dirt on him, he has no links with BLA, neither do his other two brothers for that matter but they’re supporting their own rebel kinsmen who still fight in the mountains. No one knows for sure where Shahzwar Bugti really is, whether in the custody of the pakistani intelligence agencies or the mountains. One thing is for sure, his brothers would've surely broughtup the issue if he was not in the mountains fighting the pakistan army and the government would not have said that he is in the mountains when Tehmina Daultana broughtup the subject so there is much reason to believe that Shahzwar Bugti is now in the mountains and up in arms with his fathers band of loyalists against the pakistani military. The question is whether this was a sudden move on Shahzwar's part because there is the big question of who gets the Sardari after Akbar Bugti and perhaps now Shahzwar is a candidate and obstatcle for the two nephews (grandsons of Akbar Bugti) or was this all pre planned and has he just gone to fight the common enemy and help his family? Everyone knows of the big tussle between Aali and Brahamdagh over who becomes the Sardar of the Bugti tribe so nothing is certain really! There were some sources that told us that Brahamdagh is in India at the moment which is a complete lie. If they had to flee to the neighbouring countries, then why would Shahzwar take to the mountains alone? The government just does not want to let people know exactly how strong the Bugti/Marri network is. Some sources even claimed that Nawab Bugti is alive and is sitting somewhere alongside the border of Iran/Pakistan and will re-appear when he feels the time is right for him to do so. They say that the Nawab planned the whole thing, rebels were told to tell each other constantly via radio that hes in so and so cave, the message was intercepted by the Pakistani security agencies and the cave in which they thought the Nawab was hiding, was fired at with missiles from the air. The rebels were trying to show that they were giving up their chief’s position. The trap was set and it all went smooth, just the way Akbar Khan Bugti wanted it. That is why as soon as the cave was attacked and the rebels who were far away from it started telling each other on radio that the Nawab has been killed, giving the Pakistani security forces the impression that their mission was accomplished and that’s exactly why the news came the very same day on such high level that indeed the Nawab has been killed in a cave. The truth is far from it. He sits somewhere reading the newspapers and watches television everyday, laughing all the while. Some even say hes in a hospital in Germany getting treatment. One of these two stories has to be true because these sources are very reliable.

I feel sorry whatever happened finally with Nawab Bugti but he left no choice for the army. He was one the key figure who struggled for Pakistan and was greatly inspired by Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. No doubt, he was fear less and great man but even then he was simple human being. He also committed many mistakes like killing of his fellow tribesmen and running of private jails. Do u think, this kind of thing can be tolerated in any of the civiliazed country such as USA or Europe. Furthermore, why he launched struggle when there were so many develpmental projects started for the betterment of the province. As far as, the Pakistan is concerned, the Baluch, pathans, sindhis and punjabis have equal rights on this country and no one can be allowed to take their birth right. I have a mesage for my brothers from all of the ethnicities to work together for the greater rights of the 60 % of the poor people who are living deprivied of their rights and justice all over the four provinces. i will call them and struggle together for the rights all and for the greater pakistan.
love u all balochs, love u all pathans, love u all sindhis, love u all punabis and love u all pakistani. i m proud of u.

Another thing which I want to mention about Indians that u people dont need to poke ur noses in our country domestic affairs. if there is any problem, it is between our family, our brothers and among our people. We are sorting it out by giving them their due rights and will further sort these by consulting them according to their wishes.
For the indins, u should worry more about giving the rights to the oppressed but great people of NAGALAND and Jaharkhand, as they are fighting for their due rights. Furthermore, plz try to think about the Kashmir as well where ur 0.7 million Army is begging from u to get them out becuase they are scared of the great and brave Kashmiri Freedom fighters. inshallah, soon u will be kicked out from Kashmir by these Great freedom fighters.
finally, for indians think about ur oppressed low casts hindus as well who are being discriminated right from thousands years ago. give them their rights.
So, plz go and solve ur own problems. we are honorable and respected people and so are our tribal ethninicities. Our balochs, our pathans, our sindhis and our punjabis are honorable. We are proud of each and every of them. they were our pride and they are our pride.
long live pakistan and long live baloch, pashtuns, sindhis, punjabis

Nawab Bugti was one of Pakistan's most charismatic politicians; one of the most genuinely loved leaders of his people; one of the most awe-inspiring warlords; and now he has reserved his place as one of the legends of this Islamic nation, a land that is still steeped in the ancient codes of blood-killings, tribal honor and unshakable loyalties.

The Roots, The Legend, The Life and The ResentmentsIt is important to note while evaluating his legacy that the life of Nawab Bugti must be seen in the context of his setting - the place where he comes from has values and principles completely different, sometimes at odds, with those of the West. He could mean different things to different people: an opportunistic politician of nuisance value to many middle-class Pakistanis; a traitor to the generals in the Islamabad cantonment; and a terrorist-like figure to CNN-watching Americans.

To his people, though, he was a hero.

SUPPOSEDLY 'ENLIGHTED' PEOPLE TALK OF SUCH NONSENCE IT only takes my faith from education. Its jst sad very sad that even after intellectual exposure one can support NAWAB AKBAR KHAN BUGTI... i don't care if he's alive or dead... the whole ideology should die... its the bugtis in balochistan ...the chaudhry culture in punjab ...the wadaira's of sindh ...the whole feudal concept that is plagueing our system even after SAD SAD and extremely sad 60 yrs of sorry existence ...blind are those who think Pakistan is a 'free' country ...we are NOW THE REAL GHULAAAMS!! the slaves of the feudal system... that has effectively manage to cripple us... shame on us to celebrate 14th of aug. shame on us to call Akbar bugti 'a hero' shame on us to be proud of this sorry state 'Pakistan' IF YOU THINK U ARE A TRUE PAKISTANI then recognise the plague voice against it... realise that 14th aug. is not the day to celebrate independence it is the day to mourn our condition.

One of the most distinctive and respected politician of Pakistan and former chief minister of Balochistan, Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, was mercilessly killed by the Pakistani army on 26 August 2006. Bugti was killed during a massive military operation in the Bhambore Hills, an area between the cities of Kohlu and Dera Bugti, in Balochistan province. The veteran Baloch leader had gone into hiding earlier this year after Pakistani forces launched a crackdown on Baloch rebels after rockets were fired in December 2005 during the Balochistan visit of President General Pervez Musharraf. Bugti's killing is a clear indication that General Musharraf has no tolerance for dissent, even if it is based on genuine grievances. However, the targeted killing of Bugti's killing has, in fact, bolstered the ongoing insurgency in the province which could ultimately threaten Pakistan's territorial integrity.

    Targeting The Rebel
Pakistani forces had established the whereabouts of Nawab Akbar Bugti, chieftain of the Bugti tribe, by monitoring satellite phone intercepts of the rebel leader. British-educated Bugti, who was in his 80s, was hiding in a cave complex when the army assault took place. General Musharraf reportedly gave the go-ahead for the final operation even though Bugti was in communication with the government till the last moment. As many as 21 army commandos and 37 rebels were also killed in the same operation, which targeted 50 to 80 of Nawab Bugti's closest family members and top commanders. Key members of Bugti's family were reportedly killed in the operation. Bugti's killing evoked criticism from ordinary people in Pakistan as well as in the subcontinent. The political leadership in Pakistan also condemned the killing and criticised the army for using brute force rather than resolving the issue through negotiations. Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that Bugti's killing would be always be remembered as a black day in the history of Pakistan as his death was a national tragedy which would prove harmful for the integrity of Pakistan. President of Baloch National Party (BNP) Sardar Akhtar Mengal said that this incident would have long-term negative implications as it would consolidate the Baloch movement by bringing together different factions. Mengal also warned that the rebels would seek revenge for the murder of their leader. PPP President Makhdoom Amin Fahim said Bugti's death would lead to massive destruction in Pakistan that could have lethal consequences for the polity. MMA leader Hafiz Hussain Ahmad said that Bugti's death could adversely affect the sovereignty of Pakistan. In an interview to Geo Television, he said that the dispute with Bugti should have been resolved politically. He also claimed that though the government had made agreements with Akbar Bugti, it resorted to a military operation to establish its writ in Balochistan.

    International Silence
Media reports indicated that General Musharraf, on hearing about Bugti's killing, commended the security forces for successfully eliminating the veteran rebel leader. Musharraf reportedly termed Bugti's killing as a 'great victory' for Pakistani army. Observers have said that Bugti's killing was the second high profile political assassination by the Pakistani army, which had earlier executed former Pakistani prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Bugti's killing clearly exposed Musharraf's deep dislike and intolerance towards any form of dissent. Musharraf had earlier forced former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, as well as several other leaders, to leave Pakistan in order to safeguard his political interests and continue as the unchallenged political and military head of Pakistan. Bugti's killing once again established that democracy has never been institutionalised in Pakistan, which has remained under the Army's watch since independence. Pakistani army's stranglehold on the country's politics was reaffirmed on 29 August 2006 when the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz was defeated in the parliament. Despite the fact that there was open resentment even within the ruling party over Bugti's killing, Musharraf ensured that his prime minister did not have to face an embarrassing defeat in the parliament.

For several years, Bugti had been fighting for the rights of the Baloch people, who have suffered due to exploitation of their province's resources by the Pakistani military establishment. Despite the fact that Bugti had always kept the door open for negotiations, General Musharraf never encouraged a serious dialogue with the rebel leader. In fact, Musharraf went on to say that "this is not the 1970s when you can hit and hide. You will not even know what hit you this time." Musharraf proved his point as the veteran Baloch leader was finally killed by a laser-guided bunker-buster missile, which did not give Bugti any chance of escaping. Some media reports also claimed that the weapons used in the operation against Bugti were in fact supplied by the US to Pakistan for boosting its anti-terrorism operations against Taliban and Al Qaida militants hiding in the Waziristan tribal agency. Bugti's killing clearly exposes the brutal face of the Pakistani army. However, the international community, including the US, did not condemn the incident. Even the international media did not pay much attention to Bugti's killing; the 27 August 2006 edition of US daily The New York Times carried only a 91-word news item on the incident.

Pakistan has repeatedly hurled accusations about human rights violations against neighbouring India. At all international and regional forums, Pakistan has accused the Indian security forces of committing human rights abuses in Kashmir. On several occasions, several international organisations have given statements that were clearly influenced by Pakistani allegations. However, what is not recognised is the fact that Indian forces have never resorted to aerial bombing or massive military operations against militants operating in Kashmir and other parts of the country. Compared to the Indian position, the Pakistani army has not hesitated to use brute military force against its own people.

The assassination of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti establishes the fact that the Pakistani army continues to commit grave human rights violations against its own people whether it is in Balochistan, Northern Areas or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Dialogue as a means of resolving genuine grievances has no place in the Army's vocabulary. However, Bugti's killing has, in fact, served as a message to Baloch rebel factions that they have to unite in order to fight for their rights. It remains to be seen whether General Musharraf adopts a democratic approach for redressing longstanding Baloch grievances. If he fails to do so, Pakistan could suffer another dismemberment similar to the one that took place in 1971. Rather than establishing the writ of the government as claimed by Musharraf, Bugti's killing has, in fact, opened up what could eventually end up as another bloody chapter in Pakistan's turbulent history.

It would be fair to say that the killing of the Baloch nationalist/national leader Nawab Akbar Bugti has shocked many if not most of Pakistan â€" the 99.65% civilian part that is.

The general feeling is that this was one step too far for Musharraf to take.

Many people believe that the little man in Musharraf was incensed by the derision Nawab Akbar Bugti often directed towards his burgeoning sense of self-importance. This was made obvious when he made pejorative references to Nawab Bugti as a ‘pygmy’ and ‘non-Nawab’ in his televised speeches.

The first attempt to kill Bugti was made on 17th March 2005 when high-tech TOW missiles rained all around the Nawab as he moved around his private grounds in Dera Bugti. Then luck was with him as several of people accompanying him perished in the sudden aerial attack. Sadly Eighty two 82 Hindu Baloch of Dera Bugti, who had taken shelter nearby, also died after being subjected to a direct hit.

The second attempt to assassinate him took place in early July 2006 when after some PAF bombing sorties and dozens of helicopter gunship missile attacks, elite SSG commandos were dropped near Bugti’s mountain hideout. In the ensuing firefight in which the commandos suffered heavy casualties, Nawab Bugti made a successful escape and sought sanctuary, as we now discover, in the Bhambore hills area of Thrathani, between Kohlu and Dera Bugti.

On 26 Auguest the Army said their interception of a satellite phone call led security forces to Bugti’s latest lair. A ferocious firefight took place in which it is believed that 25 commandos and between 24-37 Baloch rebels died â€" including the venerable Nawab Akbar Bugti. Upon hearing the news of Bugti’s death, Dawn reported, Musharraf was quick to congratulate his troops.

Not surprisingly the news of Nawab Bugti’s killing led to a frenzied response in Balochistan as the whole province came to a standstill amid public protest.

Caught on a hop Musharraf began dissembling. No, said the ISPR spokesman, Bugti had not been a target â€" which is pure piffle. Then came an extremely muddled response from the usually glib ex-Jamaati Minister for Information. Durrani prattled on about a cave which had seemingly collapsed with the Nawab in it, ‘We are now searching for his body’, he said.

Hang on, Akbar Bugti was an eighty-year old man incapacitated with a muscle-wasting disease and unable to walk. How could the army have so confidently announced that they had killed him if he had been trapped within the depths of a cave?

On the other hand the account of the BLA spokesman Azad Baloch, broadcast on BBC’s Urdu Service, is much more credible. According to him, having tracked down the Bugti chief on a hillside the commandos and the Baloch engaged in a bitter battle out in the open. Outnumbered the Baloch were all killed and captured including Nawab Bugti. All the dead bodies and captured people are still missing. It is a general belive that Nawab Bugti was captured and later may be tortured to death. That is why the army had no intention and refused to hand over the deceased Nawab’s body to his heirs, hence the subterfuge about digging out the cave searching for a body that will not be found.

And, why is Musharraf so scared of handing over the body to the Nawab’s family?

Simply because his grave will become a focal point, a shrine for all the Baloch as they vent their rage over the army’s merciless actions in Balochistan.

    THE FACT IS
    1. Nawab Akbar Bugti was a man who was prepared to die for his beliefs. He will be eulogized by the Baloch, even by the unborn Baloch generations yet to come.
    2. Musharraf is a disaster for Pakistan. He is a little man wearing boots of a size much too large for him.

    3. Pakistan might have succeeded to phically isolat out leader from us but he will always remain alive in our hearts and mind. Baloch Nation will continue to fight for their just rights including the right of Freedom till the last drop of thier blood.

    4. The break up of Pakistan and Independent Balochistan is invitable. Soon Balochistan will appear as an independent state on the map of world.
