Oh, Say! They CAN See! - Page 2

Warner made this distinction quite clear in his anecdote regarding the little rural town of Lebanon, Virginia. Lebanon - a coal mining town where high-tech, high-wage jobs were created during his term to replace lost mine jobs - proves that the alleged benefits of globalization don't have to exclude the workers of the United States. He also raised the prospects of a green energy revolution to replace the black energy which had kept Lebanon - among so many other locales - economically alive for so many years.

I liked what Warner had to say, and I especially liked how he said it. Despite the pointed partisan critique offered by GOP pundit Pat Buchannan on MSNBC, Warner didn't use his speech as an attack vehicle aimed at the Republicans. He instead promoted the idea that all of America is affected by the current poisonous political atmosphere, and promoted the idea that bipartisanship can work. He pointed to his own gubernatorial experience with a state legislature in which Republicans outnumbered Democrats two to one as the example which proves the point. The fact that he has already done what he believes should be done can only make his case that much stronger.

Warner happens to be running for the Senate, and I hope that he doesn't become corrupted by membership in that body should he succeed. It is people like Mark Warner who will be the leadership available to truly return America to its former position as the example to the world. Their remaining uncorrupted is the only way that can happen, for there is already far too much corruption which needs to be cleaned up. It is they who must scrape the barnacles from the hull of the Ship of State, ridding it of dead weight and obstruction, and freeing it to resume demonstrating to the world how the future is not a place to be feared, but a goal to be neared.

It was indeed an excellent speech - inspiring without being corny. There was a lot of pundit-speak last night complaining that he provided no 'red meat' for partisans. Baloney. If he weren't running for the Senate, he'd be an even better VP candidate than Biden.

That's my hope for everyone who makes it in. History tells us that the likelihood of that happening are slim and none.
