Obama: Citizen of the World, Indeed! - Comments Page 2

Obama may be a citizen of the world, but is he a natural-born American citizen eligible to become president?

On August 21, 2008, Philip J. Berg, former Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvania, filed a lawsuit against presidential candidate Barack Obama. In the lawsuit Berg challenges Obama's claims to natural-born citizenship, raising questions about the authenticity of his birth certificate which has not been produced in original form and asking about his possible dual citizenship. According to Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution, "No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President."…

By the way did you hear that all registered Republicans with odd-numbered birth years have been asked to vote on the 5th in order to eliviate the long lines that are expected at the polling places?

Jet! Shame on you. Tell the truth! All Republicans can cast votes anytime between Friday, November 7 and Sunday, November 9.

Well, maybe you were just confused. Republican absentee ballots will still be valid as long as the postmark is between November 5 and November 8.

Democrats are complaining about the requirement to vote earlier than Republicans, but hey, those Dems are always gonna whine about something, right?

If, as I assume, you were referring to my Comment #11 on this thread, that comment quoted from what was then Comment #8 which appears subsequently to have been deleted. My Comment #11 was an attempt at humor, directed at the quoted portion of former Comment #8.

But Dan DOES live in Panama, where he is NOT among Obama supporters, instead among those who seem to wish to continually amuse themselves (and only themselves) making fun of those who support Obama.
Aren't assumptions fun! And making fun of some of Senator Obama's supporters is really easy.

I do live in Panama, where most of the Panamanians don't seem to care much about either Senator Obama or Senator McCain. They have other concerns. The local newspapers tend to take rather a neutral stance. I have not conducted a scientific poll, but it is my impression that a majority of the Gringos, living in their imported Gringolandia environments, actually favor Senator Obama. Not a problem. Those who vote (or have already done so) doubtless experienced the same frustrations in getting absentee ballots as my wife and I did. It took several hours, including two e-mails, use of "snail mail" and a phone call to the U.S. to get the right stuff, and getting the ballots back to the U.S. on time would have been difficult if my wife had not been traveling to California for a visit tomorrow. Still, voting is worth the effort.

    Dan, whatever makes you happy.

Nothing about Gringolandia's political system gives me warm fuzzies.

    My voting history:

1972: McGovern (I lived in Massachusetts then and the polling place was the local auction house, so I previewed the following Saturday's auction while voting).

    1980: Ed Clark, Libertarian.

1984: Wrote in Jesse Jackson (my acupuncturist said he would not continue the treatment unless I went across the street and voted against Reagan, so I wrote in Jesse as he was somebody I knew from the old days in Chicago).

    And that's all, folks.

I don't believe in exercising one's civic duty by holding my nose and voting for the lesser of two:

    a) evils
    b) obviously developmentally disableds
    c) clowns
    d) scumbags
    e) paranoid powermongers
    f) cheap crooks (nor expensive ones)
    g) bigots
    h) senile professional old farts

and the list to choose from goes on and on, but it does NOT include: CREDIBLE LEADERS.

this is quite interesting- it hasnt really been all over the news like it should be if it was that serious with the judge and all. whenever these campaigns begin, people big up their entire pasts to try and make them look bad. everyone makes mistake- noone is perfect or flawless- but if obama wasnt really born in the US i cant say that ill support him for that reason its not following US protocol. its not making him any less of a person, just now qualified to the presidency. although im still unsure who im voting for. i was kinda ticked at how dissmissive and sarcastic obama was towards any issues mccain offered on the table at the last debate. whoever the hell wins it, we have alot of work to do. im unsure if its even repairable. you cant listen to everything you read and head, which is why im uneasy about this article DAN.

really though, this is ridiculous.whenever there is a campaign or anyone famous, things of their pasts are dug up to make people look bad. this happens every single day. being born in another country does not make obama any less of a person, just that he does not qualify for presidency. if this was all true, i am sure the media would have made it bigger than it was and who knows the real story? dan said, obama said he was bron one place, and his sister said he was born somewhere else. somewhere in the middle of that, is the truth. we may never know. this is all stupid, and im fed up and sick of obama and the way he was dissmissive and sarcastic towards mccain and the issues in the debate last wk. he does not speak with passion or for a care in what he is saying, everything he says sounds scripted because it is! i dont know who the hell to vote for!

WTF? Heloise said that the constitution should be amended so that NO one whose grandparents (on) both sides were not born in the USof A or were not US citizens--he or she should NOT be allowed to hold high office. That would have included Alberto Gonzales and now Bobby Jindal. That's what made me think of it.

Many folks would be out of the US loop if this were the case.

The maker of this video is fucking crazy. Obama's mother was a US-born citizen and hence regardless to where he was born he would be also. Nationals are also citizens. If the constitution says natural born, then that would leave Scqharteznegger pout too.

Why? Because the converse here is true. Any woman fresh from the borders of Mexico who comes here and gives birth then that child is a US citizen automatically.

Now, until, unless and when that part of the 14th amendment equation is changed shut the FUCK up people. When I said that about amending the constitution I was also including Obama.

    Too late.

  • 68 - Cannonshop

    Oct 22, 2008 at 7:58 am

#67 Lisa, it's not a matter of being a U.S. Citizen. It's a matter of being a U.S. Citizen that is qualified to serve as the U.S. President.

Arnold Schwarzennegger (sp?) is a U.S. Citizen-but he's not qualified to be POTUS.

Mind you, I don't think the allegation that Obama's not qualified (constitutionally) will stand up to serious scrutiny-he was PROBABLY born in Hawaii on the date he says he was-anything other than that, and his opponent during the Primaries would have certainly nailed him on it, the Clintons being past-masters of Opposition Research and both Lawyers themselves.

    Article 2, 5th paragraph:
"No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen Years a resident within the United States. "

Since we have nobody left alive who was born prior to 1789, that is generally taken to mean "Natural Born Citizen of the United States", meaning that even really, REALLY patriotic immigrants who've got their citizenship can't be President (or, for that matter, Vice President).

U.S. Territory tends to include U.S. military bases (i.e. if Gov. Schwarzennegger had been born, say, on a U.S. military base, or in an Embassy Compound, he would qualify), Vessels, and Diplomatic sites (otoh, if he'd been born in the Austrian Embassy in New York, he wouldn't be a "Natural Born" U.S. citizen!)

this is further muddied by the gray areas surrounding U.S. Citizenship (i.e. if you mom was a U.S. citizen, and you're born in a foreign country, very likely thou shalt be considered a yank-but if your daddy was a soldier passing through, as has happened with Amerasian kids in Vietnam, you're shit out of luck and have to do that whole "applying for citizenship" bit.)

But on a strict basis, if Obama was born in Kenya, and someone wanted to really, REALLY push it, they could argue the case-and get nowhere. His mom's a U.S. citizen, after all.

Quite an interesting video, whether made by real journalists or Roswell conspiracy theorists.

What's the big deal? Produce the birth certificate, already. If you don't have an original, there are ways (if you were born in the US or on overseas military bases of US parents) of getting a certified birth certificate. Even if your hospital is no longer in existence. I had to do it myself a couple of years ago, when it became apparent that my original Department of Defense birth certificate was rotting with age. It took three months and $65 but I did it. He can too, if he wants to.

Cindy, the promoters of this theory maintain (correctly as far as I can tell) that the birth certificate which Obama has produced, while legal, is not actually his original birth certificate or a copy of it, but rather a secondary form certifying his birth after the fact, a point on which they appear to be correct. There is no reason to believe it doesn't contain exactly the same information as the original document, but it is not that document and thats what they are all up in arms about.
