Well, it came as no surprise that Judge John Roberts Jr. was easily confirmed yesterday morning on a 78-22 vote. Roberts, 50, becomes the youngest Chief Justice since John Marshall in 1801 (who was 46). In addition, Roberts becomes the first Chief Justice to have graduated from Harvard.
According to thecrimson.com,
After taking the oath of office, Roberts said he plans to work with his colleagues to “pass on to my children’s generation a charter of self-government as strong and as vibrant as the one that Chief Justice [William H.] Rehnquist passed on to us.”
Most all of the nominees should sail through this easily. The idea of some members of Congress trying to make the Supreme Court partisan is not the process we should be taking. Even history backs me up here. John Marshall when he was appointed Chief Justice was John Adams' Secretary of State (between Jan 31, 1801 and March 4, 1801).
Obviously if the candidate is going to be partisan and let his personal opinions decide a case before hearing the facts, then they have no business being a judge in any capacity.
