For me, Nelson Mandela is a hero, a saintly figure, a role model.
In contrast, the United States government still considers Mandela and his African National Congress (ANC) as terrorists.
Even today, ANC’s former and current members still show up on America’s travel and terrorism watch lists.
Nelson Mandela, one of the ANC “terrorists,” still needs to get a special waiver to enter the United States.
“It is shameful that the United States still treats Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress this way based solely on its designation as a terrorist organisation by the old apartheid South African regime,” said Howard Berman, chairperson of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
“The ANC should have never been on the watch list. The ANC was a liberation movement against apartheid, and the United States was on the wrong side of history. This makes no sense with regard to our foreign policy,” said U.S. Representative, Barbara Lee (D-CA).
South Africa’s apartheid regime banned the ANC in 1960 and its leaders were either imprisoned in the infamous Robben Island prison or forced into exile.
The apartheid government segregated black and white communities and forced them to live in separate areas. White people, who made up only 20% of the country’s population, controlled 90% of the land.
The regime introduced grand social engineering schemes such as the forced resettlement of people. Forced removals from “white” areas affected some 3.5 million people, creating vast rural slums. Hundreds of thousands of black people were arrested and prosecuted each year, reaching over half a million a year from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s.
As also noted in the source linked above, in virtually every sphere of life, from housing to education to healthcare, “apartheid government took control over black people’s lives with a view to reinforcing their allotted role as ‘temporary sojourners,’ welcome in ‘white’ South Africa solely to serve the needs of the employers of labor.”

Coming to think of it I am surprised Mandela married the wife of Samora Machel. Such is his great love for the former oppressors I had expected him to marry the wife of John Vorster.
Although the Big Lion in power hasn't killed any whites they don't like him. They miss Mandela. Well Mandela is not coming back and the Big Lion is on his way out. I am glad the Big Lion is paving way.
Actually I wish he would leave earlier. I have no quarrels with the man. I just want a better man in his place who will address all the wrongs of the past. Folks I think soon South Africa will have the kind of president who will once and for all sort out the whites. In the current jostling to succeed the Big Lion, one Jacob Zuma seems headed to state house. I like Zuma. He is the guy I want as president. Zuma is a man who enjoys the best things in life. When he was vice president he realized they were not paying him enough. Hence he became friends with an Indian chap who bought him clothes and gave him money.
Some jealous blacks and their white friends called that corruption. His Indian friend was put on trial and convicted.
Zuma was then slapped with charges for being friends with the Indian. While awaiting trial he was accused of raping a young lady. It was a bad time. Zuma won the rape trial because the judge said the young woman had wanted to give it to him for free. A few weeks ago the corruption charges were also thrown out.
The people love Jacob Zuma. Zuma is a fun guy. He is ever smiling and loves singing and dancing. Now that is a funky guy to have as president. I can't wait for him to take over. But as a part of sorting out ungrateful white people I want Zuma to embark on a re-distribution exercise. I want him to distribute white women among the long suffering black chaps in South Africa.
He must first choose which white woman he wants. He can even have two. That done he must then distribute to his loyal supporters. And if there is a surplus he should distribute to his supporters in tiny neighboring states. I am one of his supporters. I look forward to the reign of President Jacob Zuma."

I went to CR's link to a Botswana paper. Loose Cannon's article was written in English, but the stuff on the side was written in both Afrikaans and English. Also, it should be noted that it is 18 months old. Was the successor to M'beki chosen by the ANC in 2006?
While I can understand the upsetment over the article, I strongly suspect that similar sentiments about blacks and mixed blood Africans were found in the Afrikaans press and in Afrikaans circulars in the years before the fall of the apartheid regime, certainly in the 1960's and '70's.

During the Truth and Reconciliation hearings after apartheid was abolished in 1994, the white security policemen explained how they oppressed blacks.
One story stayed in my mind. They would capture black male children, kill them, and burn their bodies.

The reason The USA and other western countries supported SA in the past was because it was a friendly country with a responsible government and was a consistent ally. They could even be trusted with atomic technology given to them by Israel.

Excellent article!! My uncle had this problem. They refused to let him into the USA because he had been jailed for "terrorism" against the South African state some years previously during apartheid even though he actually has a top job in the government now.
