If they find anything authentically malicious in their investigation, the Feds will declare that the candidate is UNFIT FOR FEDERAL OFFICE. Most of the candidates who receive notice of this outcome will often quit the race immediately in order to avoid public embarrassment. The Feds will not report the outcome of their findings except to the Director of the FBI and the candidate himself.
In 2004, Barack Obama was vetted for his U.S. Senate seat. This means that the FBI knew all about William Ayers and Jeremiah Wright. They knew about Barack’s personal history, family history, financial history, church background, past associations and politics. Their conclusion was that he was not a credible threat to American Society. The Feds know this, John McCain knows this, the Republican Party knows this, most educated voters know this but the LIV’s do not. This fact alone dismisses 90% of all the lies being told about Barack as deliberate and intentional falsehoods. The other 10% are subject to perspective and political spin.
Back to the original question, if the Republicans know that this viral campaign will not change the outcome of the election, then why are they doing it? The answer is that the Republican Party has imploded under the weight of its own greed and incompetence. It is in shambles and a struggle has begun between factions who want to create a new direction for the party. One faction, the remaining Neocons, want to continue with a fear driven party that controls Americans under the hegemony of the military industrial complex and nationalized banking system. The other faction is the fiscal conservatives who want to drive the party towards becoming a rational, business driven coalition of family values voters and moderate evangelicals. Thus far the Neocons are winning by using John McCain as a tool for propagating their hopes of social division.
The best way to nullify the effects of the Neocons is to educate people. Start by teaching them about the FBI vetting process. Prove to these Low Information Voters that they don’t have anything to fear. Regardless of the viral campaign, this time around a mostly united citizenry has already won. Barack Obama is going to be our next President. Keep in mind that it was John McCain who said to a crowd of rowdy supporters, “Barack is a good and decent man, whom we must treat with respect.”

I'm willing to admit that most of the accusations against Obama are gross misrepresentations or largely irrelevant. However, the claim that he's a socialist is indisputable. His record confirms it, his proposed policies confirm it and his public statements make it very clear.
Alex makes much in the article of the fact that Obama has been 'vetted' by the FBI. But the fact is that most of those accusations he brings up are NOT things which the FBI would investigate him for because they are just not relevant to his ability to qualify for a security clearance. It's not illegal to be a muslim or a black nationalist or a socialist or in favor late term abortions, even if those things are true about Obama.
As for your 'LIV' population, these are people who are often too busy to vote and not sufficiently convinced that their vote can make a difference. One of the goals of these last minute, high-intensity campaigns is to convince them that their vote CAN make a difference, and in the larger picture isn't that a good thing?
And BTW, the left is operating just as intense a campaign to get these LIVs out and voting for Obama with just as many lies and distortions about McCain. I'm on the MoveOn.org email list so I get daily emails making outrageous claims about McCain, Palin and the Bush administration and literally threatening me if I don't vote for Obama.
To be absolutely frank, I'd class anyone who votes for Obama as a 'LIV', because I can't imagine how anyone who is properly informed about Obama's background, associations and beliefs could vote for him in good conscience. But maybe they should be called SIVs - Selective Information Voters - since they just ignore the facts which don't fit their emotionally based preconceptions about Obama.
