How about coming within the actual city limits of Miami and actually seeing this town before condemning it?
I must be excused for this momentary outburst I am about to have. It is not common for me to exhibit hometown pride. In fact, I am usually among the first to attack Miami (aka New York, the Spanish Sequel). This is my home town, after all, and I have seen it change over the last 35 years and not for the better. I have every right to complain about this town. If nothing else I am still here, but shame on you if you insult my home from the comfort of someplace else. Shame on you, Mr. Tancredo.…

Actually, STM it is still used - ta da - in Spanish; as, for example, hispanohablante (or hispanoparlante), which mean Spanish - speaking.
And, as you pointed out, Hispania is the oldest word for Spain.
Most people in the Americas are unlikely to take offense at being called Hispanics, but they do prefer Latino(a) these days.
77 - STM
"But they do prefer Latino(a)"
Sounds like the name of one of those trendy, soy milk decaf coffees you can get on Rodeo Drive ...
78 - Clavos
Mate, I can't even afford to walk on Rodeo Drive, especially with my wife along...
79 - Clavos
What's the point of decaf coffee anyway?
That's like alcohol free beer.
80 - STM
No, it's a drama that place. Speaking of Rodeo Drive, pretend cowboys and the like, my wife has the fastest credit card in the west. Recently, however, she ran out of ammo and has put it (I say IT. But with nine, THEM is the word I should use) back in its holster for the time being ...
BTW. Do you guys have credit card people from India, complete with accents, calling you at dinner time, pretending to have anglicised names like Mike Hunt and Brooke No Moore?
I love the new globalisation.
81 - Clavos
BTW. Do you guys have credit card people from India, complete with accents, calling you at dinner time, pretending to have anglicised names like Mike Hunt and Brooke No Moore?
Oh yes, old boy. Do we ever!
And all the tech support people are from places like India and the Phillipines, and are often very difficult to understand.
I solved some of the cold solicitation call problem by dropping my landline phone and going to two cell phones-one for my wife, and one for me.
Since cell phones so far are not in the directories here, we stopped getting solicitation calls altogether.

My Spanish studies have taught me that the roots of the word Hispano is from ancient Phoenician and means land of bunny rabbits!

Miami is Hell on earth.I was there for just a two weeks. On our first day there was a shooting at an apartment building on the way to our hotel. Our rental car was stolen on our third day.on out fourth day we where in a traffic jam for three hours because a man was naked on an over pass expressway threating to jump.the sixth day A guest "in out hotel" was robbed in the parking lot at gun point he was pistol wiped but not hurt thank god.on out seventh day while strolling on washington ave in south beach there was a huge gang fight thirty or so young guys and one pulled out a gun and started shooting.on our eighth day a police officer ran over a lady sun bathing on the beach.on our ninth day we disided to try to stay in another area away from south beach but found out that the other parts of Miami are even much much worse.we got lost on an area known as liberty city in the Miami area.I have never been so scared in all my life. That is where we saw the aftermath of another shooting where five people where shot four of them dead. After that we decided to head back home and get the heck out of Miami before we get shot next.Oh my god the stories on the news are nothing but violence and shootings one after another several shootings every day all over the metro Miami area.Miami trully is like a war zone. The traffic was the always at a stand still and can only be described as grid-lock.Almost no one in Miami speaks english !!! isnt Miami part of america or is it really? Oh and on top of it all everything is so expensive over there how do the people in Miami survive. No wounder costomer service is poor and people are so rude. They are all stressed out.Our waiter said he makes two dollars an hour with out the gratuity My god two dollars an hour?Dont they have any idea how expensive everything is there? no wounder gratuity is outamaticly added like so many tourists complain about.I told the owner of the resturant that its a shame to pay people so little like that he said all waiters in Miami get paid two dollars an hour. Its a darn crime. What tha hell is wrong with florida government? do they know the sky high rent prices taxes insurence for everything, tolls. No wounder the homless population there is out of control. There is even people with children living in boxes make shift tents and abandoned buildings.Where is all the tax payers money going down there? Those roads should not be grid lock like that with all the money people pay to live there.little to Nothings even being done to expand expressways and the metro rails to releve the traffic.I could go on for ever my lord issues issues issues .Miami has become a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY !!!
84 - Boston Guy
well thats what happens Berry when you have a president like bush in office and his brother as govoner of the state of florida. And a bunch of cubans, colombians, hatians, and blacks running the city of Miami.
85 - Boston Guy
oh and a bunch of tourist offficials trying to cover up the harsh realities of the dangers and mess Miami has become. All to lure in Money that tourists continue to spend. The true Word will get around and soon tourists will eventually abandon Miami again.
86 - David K
Yes berry employees do make two dollars an hour in Miami while the owners are laghing all the way to the bank.No wounder there is no middle class in Miami. The car insurence, health insurence, home owners insurence, electric bill, are the #1 most expencive in the unites states by far.the rent prices and housing costs are out of this world expensive aspecially for the low pay.The list goes on.Miami residents will eventually have to start rioting for the government to stop taking advantage of them.
87 - Christopher Rose
I'm sure there's a very good reason that the four previous comments came from the same IP address. I just hope it isn't that Berry Williams felt the need to pretend to be several people in order to make his point...
88 - Gabby
Yes Miami needs to form one huge massive protest. Not for the immagration problems but for the low pay and high cost of living.A few protests have already happened.Miami police protested during the opening of the new performing arts center.Teachers protested because of low pay for months and one was arrested just because he organised it.I thought america had freedom of speach or did we loose that too? and homeless people protested due to lack of affordable housing.
89 - JUNE BUG
WOW EVEN MIAMI POLICE PROTESTED? MIAMI IS A REALLY MESSED UP CITY.
90 - Clavos
Chris,
Thanks for the confirmation.
I didn't even need to see the IP address to suspect those four (and possibly #68) were all from the same "writer" -- spelling and syntax errors gave him/her away.
91 - Boston Guy
Christopher rose are you smoking crack? You must be one of those looser die hard bush fans huh? lol
92 - Christopher Rose
Ooh, that's six comments and five identities now. Please knock it off now Berry or I'll simply have to delete ALL your remarks...
Incidentally, I too have spent a lot of time in Miami, for both business and pleasure. It is an invigorating mixture of the marvellous and the murderous, fortunately rather more of the former than the latter.
93 - Christopher Rose
I've never yet smoked crack Boston Guy and I'm no fan of bush the politician or the band. Bush now, that's a whole other story!
94 - Boston Guy
CLAVOS are you talking about me or someone else? that chris rose guy is a lieing loser did you see his other comment a few posts up about bunny rabbits? That is garbage and does not belong in this forum.
95 - Clavos
I'm talking about you and all of your other "identities," including Berry Williams, David K, Gabby, and June Bug.
And BTW, the word is LYING.
MR. Rose is an editor on this site, and you are THIS CLOSE to being knocked off it.
If I were the editor, you'd be gone already.
96 - Boston Guy
CLAVOS i think you are chistopher either that or chistopher is a bluff because you are wrong. I only have one identity here.and thats Boston Guy.This is really weird why would you be so obsesd in this post anyways? no one said anything untrue.Just imformative information.Need I post links? punks or should i say punk.
97 - Christopher Rose
Well now, Boston Guy, please don't tell any more fibs or I'll start to think badly of your presumed home town; I'm the Comments Editor for Blogcritics and I can see that all the remarks you are making come from the same IP address.
You're welcome to say anything you want so you really don't need to make up other identities in an obvious attempt to add support to your views. Play nice now...
98 - The Haze
This is better than paying for a movie people! someone with multiple identities can be threatened with removal from this site(lol)but Posts#47,48,55,56,58,61,62,63 are ignored? Someone please tell me that was not hatred, pure and simple! Post#82 - that was meant to be funny? by whom? Oh I know, by the ones who agree with Mr. Rose. Clavos - step back and read your your last post"Mr. Rose is an editor on this site, and you are THIS CLOSE to being knocked off it. If I were the editor, you'd be gone already. YOU SUCKASS!! I know you are but what am I? I love this site! Keep up the good work people. This is really gonna look good on our resumes when the time comes to account for our actions. Speaking of that, let's go! Lights! Cameras! ACTION! DOES ANYBODY "really" wonder why we're in the predicament we're in? Look no further than these comments.
99 - The Haze
BTW - you are not welcome to say anything you want.Read your "COMMENT POLICY" Chris. still love the place cuz it answers the question,"why are so we f**ked up?"
100 - Clavos
@#98,
You need to get out of that haze, so you can start making sense.
101 - The Haze
You prove my point by your remarks.Like I said,"I know you are,but what am I?"
102 - Ruvy in Jerusalem
Chris at #82. I'll back you up on the definition. Phoenician and Hebrew were virtual twins in the ancient world, and he word "shafán" in Hebrew means "hare." "hashafán" means "the hare." Change the "sh" to an "s" and the "f" to a "p," both common in the way Semitic languages develop, and you have a name close to Hispania.
What's up, doc? Care for a carrot?
103 - Christopher Rose
Nobody threatened anybody with banishment, o hazy one, Clavos was expressing his opinion, as were the other people expressing their dubious thoughts in the comments you numbered. Fortunately, the decision is mine and I never considered it.
As to #82, it's entirely factual, as Ruvy has more eloquently explained in #102. There is a family of wild rabbits living in our garden right now, so it's still true after all these many thousands of years!
Finally, you are indeed allowed to express any opinions you want here in this space, even stupid or offensive ones. What you can't do is make personal attacks against other commenters.
er, what's your fave colour Haze - purple by any chance? lol
104 - The Haze
To #103 - Your kidding, right? "Can I get some assistance in aisle f**king stupid, please"! Hello!!The second shot to the heart::"Fortunately, the decision is mine and I never considered it". Medic!! "We got a bleeder here!" Why didn't you,0 rosey one?(This is usually the part where the Good Knight Clavos rides in....clip clop....clip clop...clip clop).and coming in a close third:Finally, you are indeed allowed to express any opinions you want here in this space, even stupid or offensive ones. What you can't do is make personal attacks against other commenters. Those numbered posts didn't qualify as personal attacks against other commenters? That's right, you didn't consider it.The decision is yours, right? and how'd you guess my favorite color? don't tell me your a psychic too!(lol)Can I use this piece as a resume? I want to write with you guys.Where do I sign up? or is this like the masons? I love this place!!!This is my fix to make up for what I used to do.(Go ahead, ask, you know you want to!)

Berry Haze Boston Guy:
If you hit that lo-o-ong skinny key (it's kinda shaped like a bar) at the bottom of your keyboard right after you hit the "period" key, your multiple-posters ruse will be much more stealthy.
Just a tip.
Shhhhhh.......
106 - Boston Guy
ok some one in here is full of it, because I am neither haze or berry and if you where being honest you would know that.unless you must have me confused with some one else.So every person that posts in here from now on is me? ha ha ok.In my opinion some one or some people are starting this argument to me and who ever else just to cause spamming so no one sees all of the negative posts above about Miami. This just proves more that Miami has alot to hide. Please dont take your political issues out on me.I have better things to do than post back and forth nonsense to some dishonest person in here good buy. P.S: I do beleive Miami is a third world slum city with an exteamly high crime rate and ghetto impoverished city.WHERE RESIDENTS ARE STRUGGLING TO PAY FOR THE HIGH COST OF LIVING WITH PEANUTS FOR PAY CHECKS.Oh and and when is Miami going to fix its transpertation issues? Its gridlock there now imagine in ten years from now.
107 - Boston Guy
Lol have fun waisting your time and scroll space on your next post,s or should I say lies.remember covering up your problems down there will only make it worse in the long run. I'M DONE WAISTING MY TIME HERE. "GOOD BYE" AND MUCH LUCK TO YOU DOWN THERE.YOU WILL NEED IT.
108 - Plump
Don't get me wrong, Miami is a scary place and it does have many major issues "however", its the most exciting city to visit in the world !!!
109 - Carlos
... I should know I am A Miami native born and raised and left for obviouse reasons. I am of Cuban and Colombian decent, however I was born in the United States "IF YOU CONSIDER MIAMI STILL PART OF THE UNITED STATES".
......................................
I expected to be treated like an american and not be ripped off and treated like people in third world counties like all citizens in Miami,"Americans AND Immagrants not". ..."Its crimminal"
110 - Carlos
I forgot to say Miami is not just third world its "americas hell" !!!
111 - Carlos
........Also anyone who really lives in Miami and is not rich or an immigrant or or works for local government, or getting help from relatives, will tell you it is impossible to get by on a normal salery or pay check.
112 - Carlos
....... There have been protests from teachers and even police and so on because they are not able to make ends meet. That alone should be a big sign that somthing is very wrong.
113 - Carlos
............. By reading some of the other posts on here I can see I am not alone.
114 - Carlos
........Hey sorry for all of the posts in a row. I did not realise how many I posted. "please fogive me and let it slide this time. Miami just has so many problems I just kept thinking of more of Miami,s problems to mention. "again sorry"
115 - DREADS N GOLDS 305

116 - Mexicano Miami
ha ha yea I hate white people.
117 - D D GUY
White people suck? ok than niggers and spics suck !!! Stop all the hate Geeze. I would "ONLY" visit Miami if I had a bullet proof vest and a very large machine gun but not in a million years would i ever live in Miami.
118 - Clavos
All of you; whether Anglo, Latino, African American, Caribbean African or Latino African who have posted racist comments above, are just reinforcing the rest of the country's negative image of us.
I've lived here since 1958. The changes I've seen since since then have been MUCH more positive than negative.
Sure, there are problems, and some of them stem from ethnic differences, while sadly, some are hate-based.
But, when you consider how well so many different nationalities and ethnicities live work and play together in this beautiful city of ours, it's clear that Tom Tancredo and others are dead WRONG: we are NOT a Third World city.
The Latinos, the folks from the Caribbean nations, and the people from Europe and other parts of the world who now call Miami home have ALL contributed to make it the vibrant, interesting, beautiful and booming city it is today.
The good aspects of Miami are, in fact, the future of America, and they look GREAT.
WE, ALL OF US, have accomplished that together. Be PROUD of that!
119 - Carlos
Hello Clavos "welcome"... Although I fully respect your opinion. I have to be honest. I totally disagree with you. .....................................................
Exept you are right on one thing. Indeeed Miami is going under a massive building boom. In fact The biggest in the united states right now. Have you counted the cranes? .....................................................
Unfortunately most of the people moving to those new apartments are rich, from you guessed it 3rd world countries, like for example colombia...
FACT: The "VERY FEW" anglos that are still left continue to leave in massive numbers not just anglos american born citezens as well. Still dispite that fact The Miami metro is growing and is the fastest growing region in the united states. Miami is still and will always be My home city and I love to see progress there. However there is indeed more harm happening than good.Little to nothing is being done about affordable housing yet they are building million dollar skyscrapers left and right...
Where is all the tax money going that the local Miami government is making from the building boom going? Nothing is being done to handle the massive growing population when it comes to transpertation they need to expand the metro rail system and build more expressways or double deck the roads. It amazes me that nothing is being done.My god imagine in the near future. Even if they started building now it would be years to finish. They will be in big trouble down there very soon. If nothing is done soon they are going to have a bunch of abandoned cars traped on the roads...
Its already the worst that I have ever seen in any american city.sure every big city has traffic in its core and some on the expressways but not total gridlock even way in the suburbs and even on side streets far far from the city core 60 or more miles away...
Look at biscayne blvd just north of the new performing arts center. Massive billion dollar apartment buildings and litterally just right behind them is the poorest neighborhood in the nation."overtown" It is not an opinion that is a fact.It is my opinion however that this fact is pretty outragouse.Perfect example of how the rich in Miami look down on the poor and how fine a line there trully is between the rich and the poor in Miami. When tancredo called Miami a third world country that is what he was refering to.He was not even talking about the immigrants. People just naturally assumed that. ............................................................
Funny how local government likes to show south beach and star island to the media but they almost seem to pretend extream poverty and violence ridden areas in Miami are not even there. When in fact they are by far the majority. they are real and have real people living in them. "overtown" liberty city" GOULDS" "ALLAPATAH" "PERRINE" "RICHMOND HIGHTS" Miami gardens"south west coconut grove"south miami hights" "opa-locka" "carol city""brown subs" "scott prjects" "pork and beans""medley"west hialeah"and so on...
To give you an idea of how the local government works in Miami Clavos answer this question. Do you remember just several months ago a charity gave Miami money for affordable housing. Guesse what happened? The city of Miami local government took that money bought land and sold the land to another developer for profit. Then several local government leaders pocketed the money. "Real nice" the rich stealing from the poor. Typical Miami government for ya...
Im not even going to get into the extream crime and violence issue in Miami. Though not as bad as the 80,s and 90,s when there was an epidemic of tourists slayings and so many murders the morge had to rent freezer trucks from burger king to store all of the DEAD BULLET RIDDEN bodies In 1981 Miami was not only the murder capital of the united states but it was the murder capital of the world.
The violence is still out of control. The 2006 murder rate went up 45%...
"Clavos" again I respect your opinions but you just can't deny facts.
120 - Carlos
Remember it seems I'm being very negative but I am only telling it how it really is...
Just like you Clavos I love Miami with a passion. Its my city I was born and raised there. Im very proud of being from Miami. Many only wish they could say they where born in Miami...
Miami is known for being the most exciting city to be. In My opinion Miami in many ways is the best city in the world and has more potential than any city in the world. Miamians are the coolest and toughest people on earth...
I just don't like when seriouse issues in Miami are ignored and pushed under the table. Why hide it? That is what has and will ruine Miami even more. That is why Miami is so messed up now and getting worse...
Don't you think people know whats really going on? ha ha well the smart ones do beleive me....
ignoring the problems and aspecially denying them is not the right thing to do. I could have tried to help save Miami but I doubt I could have changed things much. Then I had a baby and decided its time to move to a city that treats its locals with respect. When and if Miami ever solves at least a few issues suck as the violence the high housing cost mixed with low pay and adds to the metro rail and roads then I may one day go back to My home "Miami" You have no idea how much I would love to raise my child "safeley" and "financially securly" in my home city...
I beleave one day it could be possible Miami has over come probably more issues than any city in the united states in the past. What major city has had a catagory 5 Hurricane Andrew and survived it? ha ha none zero exept for Miami the majic city.No city has had anywhere near as many obsticles as Miami.Thats why I beleave one day I will be able to go home back to Miami. But the first steps would be to address the issues and stop ignoring them. "god bless My city"
121 - Christopher Rose
Carlos: There are three dots in an ellipsis, THREE.
122 - Carlos
............. my last post of the dayI promise. I hope I am not bothering anyone with all of these posts in a row. If I am sorry. I just cant help speak my mind about this interesting subject..............................................."Clavos" or anyone else, I would love to hear your opinions and suggestions on resolving some of Miami,s issues................................................. I would like to point out another fact. John Timmoty "sorry if I spelled it wrong" the police cheif of Miami is the highest payed police cheif in the united states, yet at the same time Miami police are some of the lowest paid in the united states.even with the fact being that Miami is one of the most expensive to live in. There is definitly somthing wrong with that dont you think?............................................ I see why teachers police and so on are protesting in Miami.
123 - Carlos
well it was going to be my last post. ok rose sorry.I admit I am not very educated.I went to Miami edison for god sakes give me a break. lol Just another example of how bad the education is in Miami. It has the highest drop out rate in the united states for any big city.I try spacing the paragraphes but it doesnt work when it gets posted?
124 - Sam from Denver
A freind of mine was murdered in Miami for his shoes !!! Shot with an ak-47 machine gun. Lets be realistic here Everyone knows Miami is a dangerouse city. We all warned him not to go. He went anyway.
125 - Brad Schader
We all know Denver never has a senseless killing. I remember when I stayed in the hostel in Denver. They told us never ever go left of the hostel because we would be robbed if we were lucky and killed more than likely.
