Every few days some loon emails me a warning about the new uber-government of North America, but I'm still not buying it.
Being involved with political groups of a Libertarian persuasion, I get on the mailing lists of all sorts of well-meaning, but somewhat loony people on both the right and left of the political spectrum - and sometimes those two extremes are hard to tell apart. One of the things which is high on their list of concerns is the impending surrender of the sovereignty of the United States under the authority of a new continental government sometimes referred to as the 'North American Union'. I get a different email warning about it every few days.…

Myth: The SPP was an agreement signed by Presidents Bush and his Mexican and Canadian counterparts in Waco, TX, on March 23, 2005.

Fred, the fact that the SPP is real doesn't mean that the conspiracy is real. Read the agreement yourself. It's innocuous and somewhat boring. It has a lot to do with Canada's inability to secure its various ports of entry and that's about it.
There are reasonable reasons for Canadians to object to the SPP, but again they have nothing to do with the creation of a NAU. That's just not in there.
Showing me that some loony Canadians believe the NAU is real doesn't actually prove the point. Some crazy Americans think it's real too.

Ah, my favourite piece of rewritten American history: the War of 1812 "that nobody won". Well, just for the record, I don't buy that revised view of history any more than I buy yours.
And Fred, you know as well I do it was the British who put Washington to the torch, not Canada, which actually didn't really exist at the time. The US government did run off quick, though, and the pommy officers got to eat all the hot food they'd left (British freeloaders!) :)

I still don't agree that there is such a thing as a North American union, though, or that it is some kind of bizarre plot by imperialists. It's the stuff of fantasy.
There are a couple of mutually beneficial trade agreements, and why shouldn't everyone take advantage of that?
War of 1812 not withstanding (and let's face it, it was a long time ago), America can't today be considered a rogue state, either. It's a force mostly for good, despite the revisionist view that has us all hand-wringing and navel gazing over all the dreadful stuff we've supposedly done (collectively).
I don't buy that either, and I don't buy that the US is the cause of all the world's ills (or even a fraction of them) and neither should anyone else in the English-speaking countries.
The deciding factor in this: the US doesn't have the total destruction of races, religions or countries as its raison d'etre.
In fact, if the US was not in the position it is today, the world would be a very different place so you actually have them to thank to a large extent for the fact that you are able to express the kinds of views you have here. If history hadn't been so kind, you might be speaking German or Russian and I'd probably be speaking Japanese.
Protecting its interests is fine with me, as the way things stand at the moment, my interests are tied up with those of the US.
One of my main interests is the right not be blown up by idiots, so yes, there is a war on terror, and there ought to be as well.
Just because the Americans gave it a silly bloody name doesn't mean it isn't real, or that it shouldn't be vigorously pursued.
I realise it must be difficult for Canadians having an elephant just to the south, but it's no excuse for subscribing to the mistaken notion that the US is still the real aggressor.

The North American union will happen and is already happening.. Why people don’t know anything about it is because of the media. Governments like citizens to be entertained so that they will not pay attention. It works.. People care about their x-box, playstation, job, cars, houses, and most importantly.. It is out only ability to share information with each other that the government hasn’t been able to contain and control completely YET. But there is talk about a new Internet being implemented in the next ten or so years which will be faster stronger and all the positives they say, but also with more control in one place. I’m guessing the government will control usage time, and an ultimate blocking of anything they don’t want shared. A firewall on the world wide Internet to protect them against people gaining knowledge. Knowledge is power… but to the government our ignorance is bliss.
Many will laugh at my words.. And that’s fine.. But I feel sadness for those of you who don’t want to be truly free. Or at least not oblivious to the fact that we are controlled like rats in a maze that is being built by us for us...
