President George W. Bush would never make it in sales.
Bush is giving a speech in less than two hours, trying to convince the American public that the war in Iraq was justified, and that we need to stay.
Bush used the patriotic feelings generated by the 9/11 attacks to further his agenda to attack Iraq. Now, those feeling are wearing off, and the American public is asking itself honest, hard questions about why we are there.
George Bush's problem is that he doesn't understand that all of life is about communication and sales. I personally believe — as do most Americans by now — that we never should have attacked Iraq, and I've said so from the beginning. BUT — let us assume, for the sake of this discussion, that attacking Iraq somehow made us safer. Let us assume, for the sake of argument, there were good reasons to do so.
What are they?
You see where I'm going with this? Bush hasn't done much to really sell this war to us. All he's said are things that are outright lies: That Saddam had WMD. That Iraq had something to do with the 9/11 attacks. We now know that both of those statements are false.
Even if you're a person that really wants to believe in our President, what REASON has he given us to believe in him? When we see Americans dying, don't we have the right to ask ourselves, why?
Bush needs to answer one question effectively in order to sell this war to us. And that question is this:
How has attacking Iraq helped the United States of America?
A typical Bush answer to that question up until now has been things like:
-- Spreading democracy in the Middle East will make us safer in the long run.
-- We're bring the war to them, instead of fighting it at home.
But those aren't real answers. Why should we care about the Middle East when we have so many problems at home? If you think that sounds too harsh, then think of it this way: Why not go solve the world's problems AFTER we've solved our own?
And as far as bringing the war to them, it's been proven — and is widely accepted by almost everyone now — that Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks.
To add insult to injury, whenever Bush has been questioned about Osama bin Laden, his reply has been that he is not concerned about him.
Not concerned? About the guy who masterminded the biggest attack on our soil? Instead, concerned about Iraq?
Very poor sales job, Mr. President.
