Yesterday, I highlighted some of the problems that Senator Kerry will face in Thursday's Presidential Debate. Now, for the President, I will give some insight into some of the strengths he will have.
First, and most obvious, is that he can expose John Kerry's vacillating positions. Kerry has flip flopped on the War on Iraq. He was for the war, not the funding. He said it was the right thing in August, now it was the wrong thing in September. He has absolutely no credibility in terms of defense. He vows to boost our intelligence and defense spending, but his voting record shows that he is a defense and intelligence slasher.
Secondly, the President, unlike his opponent, has a vision for our country. John Kerry has put forward no vision or plan on how to win the War on Terror and the War in Iraq. If you consider bashing the President a plan, then you are beyond a blind partisan.
Now, in terms of the actually debate, President Bush has an advantage in terms of charm. The President has a "regular-guy" charm to him. His answers are straight to the point. Senator Kerry is more aloof and he is more extensive in his answers.
Now, setting my partisanship aside, Senator Kerry is an excellent debater. He was a champion debater in high school and college. He certainly knows what he is doing. The stakes are so much higher for Kerry, so I'm sure he will bring his best to these debates. He has to. If he does not dazzle and Bush does not goof, his campaign is dead. I do not think Bush will have a major screw up, so dazzle Kerry must.
