Freedom Is Impossible Without Secrets and Lies

Wow. I can only guess at the glee the conservatives will feel when they see an article by a bleeding-heart liberal with that title.

But I must take a break from Blogcritics — I'm spending far too many hours here that I need to devote to other pursuits, at least for now. One of those pursuits is writing. The Pacific Northwest Writers Conference deadline for story submissions is in January, and I've got two stories and a few poems that I intend to submit. You see, the PNW Conference is one of the few (as I understand it) that give critiques on all submissions, and I'm a sucker for suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous opinion.

What does this have to do with politics? My short story — which is complete but needs to be sliced/diced/julienned to fit the submission requirements — is about the sheer impossibility of freedom without secrets and lies and relates how a certain set of lies back in the 60's may have saved civilization as we know it. For those who are curious, that has to do with the government hushing up what likely happened to the USS Scorpion, which now appears to have been torpedoed by the Soviets. If that had become public knowledge, most here can well imagine how far things might have gone.

But I am deeply appreciative to all here — most especially Dave, Clavos, and Roger - for the guidance you've given, for I'm aware of how I've benefited from your patience and constructive criticisms. I'll be back in several months — but until then, just remember: Democrat = good! and Republican = bad! See, a little dedicated partisanship never did any harm...as long as it was promptly ignored by all and sundry.

Good health and fortune to all, and wish me luck!

It's not freedom which is impossible without secrets and lies, but rather a functioning society.

Anyway, good luck with the short story and other literary endeavors.

Oh, and did I mention I absolutely hate the musical selections you put in your Amazon links - absolutely worthless feelgood leftist humbug!

Good luck Glenn, I look forward to reading the finished product. Although I often don't agree with you, I appreciate your desire to use facts and logic to solve problems. Given proper time anyone under those constraints can come to a reasonable compromise.

    Glenn,

    Simply put, freedom isn't free.

I congratulate you for stretching your not inconsiderable writing talents and branching into fiction and poetry. I think you will do well in the PNW Conference competition, and I look forward to your return.
