Ed's Back!

We've got a federal election in two weeks in Canada. And Ed's Back! Running for the NDP, he's made snow angels on Parliament Hill with Rick Mercer. And he's not afraid to put on the gloves and work it out in the corners. And Jaunty Jack is ready to pick up the hat trick.

The NDP are a bunch of communists. They make the Greens look moderate. They hate the US. No wonder you're a supporter...

Wow, I haven't been accused of being a commie like Ed since the early 80s, except in that case, it was an Argentine consular official who was hiding out in Canada after being knee-deep in the Dirty War which saw thousands of civilians murdered.

I guess this is just a precursor for will be happening in the US over the next couple of months, martial law, disappearances, gulags.

Oh, wait, you already have that. Well, carry on with your insanity, then.

Glad I don't live where they manage, despite all odds, to breed assholes like RJ.

Jim, I appreciate your powerful imagination.

"I guess this is just a precursor for will be happening in the US over the next couple of months, martial law, disappearances, gulags.

Oh, wait, you already have that."

It's good that you don't let mere reality interfere with your fantasy life.

To the best of my knowledge, the vast majority of disappearances in the U.S. are intentional.

The United States government, in conjunction with key allies, is running an 'invisible' network of prisons and detention centres into which thousands of suspects have disappeared without trace since the 'war on terror' began.

I think Maher Arar might differ in opinion with you, Eric. Of course, I guess in a country which has one of the highest per capita incarceration rates in the world, you don't really need a reason. After all, he only spent almost a year being tortured in Syria for no reason at all.

One of the reasons I mentioned Argentina was because the similarities between it and the USA are so close. A prosperous free country reduced to ruin through despotism, mismanagement and war.

And the outcome of the progression isn't positive, but if that's where you want to go USAians, just don't take the rest of us with you.

As they say in Latin American: Burnyer Snowshoes!

One amusing sidelight in international affairs is watching post-default Argentina screw the IMF and the big bondholders, now that the country's taken itself out of the system for now.

The government owed the IMF a 6 billion loan payment. It said to the IMF: sure we'll pay it--IF you give us a "loan" for 6 billion dollars. Which loan we probably won't repay either--without another "loan." The IMF caved.

The Argentinians also stonewalled the big bondholders on negotiating repayment; then said sure, we'll negotiate--if you agree to take a tour of our slums to put your blood-sucking demands in context. All indications are that the bondholders will be taking that tour--and then settling for pennies on the dollar.

Almost as fun as watching Spain and France screw the U.S. on Iraq. Delightful!
